AGNES OF GOD * (Meg Tilly, Jane Fonda, Ann Bancroft) A scene where a bunch of nuns are skating on a pond at their convent; this was Canada, remember. You ever see nuns in their traditional "uniforms"; OK, habits, SKIING? The two I encountered at Heavenly Valley one day knew what skiing is about - some Austrian order; blue habits rather than black like most orders or the mostly white like the Dominicans. Flying veils as they wailed on down the slopes - an unusual sight. AIRBORNE (Shane McDermott) A rollerblader flick that contains a lengthy ice hockey scene. Haven't seen the whole thing; just stumbled across the hockey scene. ALDRICH AMES: TRAITOR WITHIN (Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Pena) A scene where Ames is teaching his son to skate and play hockey. AMELIE (*) (unknown) SallyH [mashkg@aol.com (MASHKG)] reported seeing a French film featuring Rudy Galindo. I must assume that he is doing some skating. -oiseauxbleu writes: < wrote: While following Linus around New York City on a desperate search for his lost blanket, Snoopy stops off at Rockefeller Center, first to skate a beautiful four-minute routine and then to play hockey. By JL: Please do recall that Sparky Schultz was grooming Snoopy for the Grenoble Olympics; he drew Snoopy doing double axels in some of the daily strips of the time. BREAKING THE ICE (*) (Irene Dare, Margret Hamilton, Charlie Ruggles) Plot has a boy running away to pursue a singing career. Irene Dare listed as a skater but I have never heard of her until recently. Haven't seen it. BROTHER'S PROMISE: DAN JANSEN (*) (unknown) Based on the life of US speedskater Dan Jansen. Speed skating scenes up to and including Lillihammer. BRUNO (*) (Shirley MacLaine, Gary Sinise, Kathy Bates, Gwen Verdon, Jennifer Tilly) Fable about a Catholic school spelling champ that is something of a cross-dresser. Ran across a hockey scene in this one. This kid appeared to be the kid from HOME ALONE THREE. BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON (Doris Day, Gordon MacRae, Mary Wickes) A scene where a lot of locals are skating on a simulated pond; D. Day and G. MacRae are both actually skating here. Once heard that MacRae was a serious ice dancer but that wasn't obvious here. CANADIAN BACON (*) (Alan Alda, John Candy, Reha Perlman) Saw a little more of this one recently. There was a little skating beyond the hockey scene I first reported, possibly on that canal in Montreal. There were also a couple of scenes in which skates appear; one in which someone was sharpening some skates and one showing someone throwing a pair of skates away. CARMEN ON ICE (HBO TV special - Katerina Witt, Brians Boitano, Brian Orser) Joe & Mary Schirmer posted that this HBO event was also released as a movie. CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (Jack Nicholson, Candace Bergen, Art Garfunkel) Several netters (Janet, Trudi, Edie/Devon, Fred, Posterboy) posted notes about this one. While Nicholson is pondering the "ideal woman" (There ain't no sech animal) an image is added of a woman dressed in white skating at Rockefeller Center. Trudi Marrapodi suggested that the skater is none other than JoJo Starbuck. Finally saw this movie; a loser. The skater in white did not really look good enough to me be a former National pairs champion though she did, as Jack Nicholson noted, posess "quite a pair". Elite skaters tend not to be so well endowed, though. Ah, what a THIN WonderBra or it's equivalent can do for a lady. CHAMPIONS, A LOVE STORY (unknown) Margaret Burwell posted about this one originally. Trudi sent the following: Teenage American female skater with a Skate Mom From Hell meets hockey-playing boy and persuades him to form a pair with her. His dad and her mom are both against it but soon they both see how much it means to the kids, and they get on board. But just when the pair is starting to get somewhere in national competition and, yes, fall in love--the boy dies in a plane crash. The girl now must find the strength to continue with her singles career in his memory. CHASING AMY (unknown) Ran across a short scene by the principals at a hockey game. The movie looked like a loser. CHRISTMAS ANGEL, THE (*) (Dorothy Hamill, Elvis Stojko, Rudy Galindo, Tonia Kwiatkowski) Rebekah Branch wrote: excerpt from the back of th DVD: "The Christmas Angel is a family story, hosted by Olivia Newton-John and Chip Davis. This made-for-tv special is the most elaborate ice skating sho ever produced.....The timeless Christmas music by Manheim Steamroller sets the perfect background for this ice skating spectacular. The Christmas Angel is a classic tale of good triumphing over evil, told in an enchanting way with ice skaters portraying the characters......" The plot is rather thin, but that skating is absolutely superb. COOL RUNNINGS (John Candy) A scene including figure skaters, speed skaters and hockey players at the Calgary Olympics. The Jamacian bobsled team was trying to learn to run on ice in this scene. COUNTESS OF MONTE CRISTO (Sonja Henie) Her last movie. Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. CUTTING EDGE, THE (Moira Kelly, D.B. Sweeney, Terry O'Quinn, Roy Dotrice) A lot of real skating; I assume you have all seen this one at least once. Kelly and Sweeney do some of the skating themselves. In fact, I saw a post some time ago from Timothy Mizerak suggesting that the skater doing the rudimentary single axel as Kate entered her rink late one morning was actually Sweeney; can't tell from the tape, though. Sweeney was reported to also play a little hockey. Also, I have been told that Moira Kelly was once a competitive skater. I have seen posts since that dispute this; that Kelly was just a fast learner but according to Robin Cousins, might well have become a first class competitor had she started early enough. She certainly could project the stereotypical competitor attitude. D2: MIGHTY DUCKS, THE (Emilio Estevez) I've seen only pieces of this one. Hockey, obviously. D3: MIGHTY DUCKS, THE(Emilio Estevez) Again, I've seen only pieces of this one. Hockey, obviously. DAD, THE ANGEL AND ME (*) (unknown) Susan Burr posted: Last night, did anyone watch "DAD, THE ANGEL AND ME" on Fox Family? The little girl whose mother died was a skater. Some of it was kind of realistic because she went to practices early every morning before school. She was supposed to be 10 years old and was working on her triple toe though, and carried her skates tied together over her shoulder. Why do they always do that in movies? Real skaters don't do that. By JL - I haven't seen this one and I have NEVER carried my skates tied together over my shoulder in 50 year of skating. DEATH TO SMOOCHY (*) (Danny DiVito, Robin Williams, Catherine Keener) A kiddie TV character is replaced by a character along the lines of Barney and the older character wants to get even. A promo clip showed some of the characters ice skating a number of times. Added 13-Apr-03 by JL: There is a character inspired ice show in this title with a lot of show style skating. Elvis Stojko had a piece of this one. The two principal characters do something of a head-to-head competition at the end of the movie. The Smoochy character does a pretty fair axel and split jump - in costume. The stand-ins had to be fair skaters. This title has not surfaced in close to a year and a half since I first saw previews of it on a BA flight to London, 08-Sep-01. That date sound near familiar? I was in London when Osama's little garden party went down in New York and DC. We were walking by Parliament to cross Westminster Bridge when we started hearing bits of talk on the street about it; didn't see a telly until that evening, though. DELIRIOUS (Mariel Hemmingway, John Candy, Emma Samms, Raymond Burr) This one is a soap opera fantasy. The long closing scene has Hemmingway and Candy skating alone on the Wollman rink in Central Park. I believe that this rink also appeared in the opening of MONEY TRAIN and in other titles. Triangular shape looked the same. Hemmingway was wearing black figure skates and Candy was in hockey skates. Both appeared to be doing their own skating. DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? (*) (unknown) I have seen some promos for a new movie based on the U.S. hockey win over the USSR at Lake Placid in 1980. We are asked, "where were you" when this game took place. As it happened, I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the time. A toll collector exitedly told me that the U.S. hockey team had just beaten the Russians; as they did at Squaw Valley in 1960. The condition of the scoreboard at Blyth Arena at Squaw was preserved until the arena roof was allowed to accumulate so much snow one winter that it collapsed. I skated many times at Blyth Arena and always saw that score. Oddly enough, I worked several summers at the stock brokerage started by Charlie Blyth, a onetime partner of Dean Witter; the 1960 Olympics arena at Squaw Valley was named for Blyth. DON KING: ONLY IN AMERICA (*) (unknown) A scene at an ice rink with the Don King character skating at some rink in his white pimp suit. Some skater in the background did a couple of creditable spins. Only saw pieces of this one. DON'T SHOVE (*) (Harold Lloyd) A silent film where Lloyd's character tries to impress his date at an ice rink. Haven't seen it. DOWNHILL RACER (Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Dabney Coleman) A speed skating shot at some imaginary Olympics. DUCHESS OF IDAHO, THE (Esther Williams, Van Johnson, Elanor Powell) A short background scene of the ice rink at Sun Valley. This movie is sort of a swimming version of SUN VALLEY SERENADE. DUMBO The pink elephant scene in which Dumbo and his rodent pal are sloshed contains some ice skating pink elephants. ED TV (Rob Reiner, Michael McConahghey) Saw a short clip from this one that showed a rink with the movie principal driving a Zam around on a hockey arena; there is some sort of hockey team mascot skating in this scene. ELLERY QUEEN: TOO MANY SUSPECTS (Jim Hutton, David Wayne) Julia Linthicum (janette@access.digex.net) posted a response about the TV movie that served as the pilot for the short-lived "Ellery Queen" TV show from the 1970s. It had a short skating scene at the Rockefeller Center ice rink with Ellery and his niece. The niece was doing her "Sonja Henie act" and Ellery had his nose in a book. END OF DAYS (*) (Arnold Schwarzwnegger, Kevin Pollak, Rod Stieger, Gabriel Byrne) One of many end-of-millenium, end-of-the-world sagas. There is a short scene of skaters at the Rockefeller Center rink while Arnold is wandering around New York. EVERYTHING HAPPENS AT NIGHT (Sonja Henie, Robert Cummings, Ray Milland) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. FACE OFF (*) (Trudy Young, Art Hindle) Different lifestyles hamper the romance of a hockey player and a singer. FALLING IN LOVE (*) (Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Dianne Weist) Two people in separate boring marriages fall in love. There is a scene at the opening of the film at the Rockefeller Center ice rink at Christmas; a real mob scene on that tiny rink. Another Rockefeller Center Rink scene appears later in the movie; the rink is mobbed again. FAMILY MAN (*) (Tea Leoni, Nicholas Cage) A stock trader finds himself projected into the life of a married blue collar worker. There is a short background scene at an outdoor ice rink near the beginning of the film. A couple is shown doing a pair sitspin. FANTASIA (Disney classic full-length animation) The second music sequence in the film features some Tinkerbell genre fairies, or pixies if you prefer, ice skating. Fantasia has to be the source of Tinkerbell for the Peter Pan feature; same pixie dust, wings, flight motions, wand waving, etc. FANTASIA 2000 (IMAX release of Disney's updated Fantasia) The players in the Rhapsody in Blue piece all become skaters in part of this piece. Incidently, the best new sequence in this film is the Elgar Pomp and Circumstance piece starring the one and only D. Duck; that one alone is worth going to see it. FARMER'S DAUGHTER, THE (Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Charles Bickford) A scene on a pond at the home of the political lead, probably a senator, since the Loretta Young character ultimately ran for and won a seat in the House; relatively daring premise for the late 40s. One of at least two movies Loretta Young has skated in. Does anyone remember her old TV series that opened with her making her signature entrance opening a door swinging a different high roller dress around each week? FIELD OF DREAMS [1935] (*) (John Mills) "Saki Hajnal" wrote: The movie was partly filmed at Streatham Ice Rink (London). The last part of the film takes place at a carnival in the fictional ?Crystal Rink Hotel?. All around the ice barrier are two-person dining tables, complete with white tablecloths and lamps. The diners are entertained watching skaters in fancy dress, or being pushed round the ice themselves in upholstered, carriage-like sledges. In one sequence the ice is cleared for a short ice show. This features a male skater on stilts and two free skaters, a woman and a child. FLASHDANCE (Jennifer Beals) Steve Hazen posted a reminder of this one. Two skating scenes. One where a friend of Beal's character is skating around her. The other scene is at some sort of local competition where the same friend crashes in the competition several times. (Note the non-skating scene near the start of the movie using a CHAIR, troops.) FOOLS RUSH IN (Matthew Perry, Salma Hayek, Jill Clayburgh) A scene of the Rockefeller Center Rink right at the beginning of the movie. FOR LOVE OF THE GAME (Kevin Costner, Kelly Preston) A 40 year old MLB pitcher recalls a romance while pitching a potential perfect Series game. One winter scene has him giving some ice skates to this girlfriend. She says she will use them in Central Park. She does a small amount of shaky skating on the spot, though. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (Roger Moore, Lynn Holly Johnson, Topol) LHJ as an Olympic hopeful skater and resident jail-bait. Skating scenes were shot at Cortina along with the skiing. Much of the movie, including the obligatory car chase starring that absurd little yellow Citroen C2V, supposedly in Spain, was shot on location on the Greek island of Corfu; I recognize a lot of the backgrounds. I've been on that road through the olive trees that the car chase was staged on. The location of Corfu is left as an exercise for the reader; no ice rinks there, though. The nearest rink is likely in Athens. My brother and sister-in-law were extras in the casino scene in this title and I have been in that casino myself. FRESH HORSES (Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy) "futurgard" wrote: In the movie FRESH HORSES made some time in the eighties, Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald are shown skating at (then) Kings Island Winterfest in Cincinnati, Ohio when they would freeze the entire fountain for the Christmas celebration. FRESHMAN, THE (*) (Marlon Brando, Matthew Broderick) Something of a Godfather spoof involving a Komoda Dragon and a rather predictable ending. Marlon Brando skates in this one at a "family" skating outing, reportedly with Sandra Bezic; she is listed in the credits prominently. FROLICS ON ICE (*) (Irene Dare) The description read: 1940 musical about a barber. There were ice skating scenes featuring Irene Dare. Haven't seen it. FUNNY FARM (Chevy Chase) Caught a local background pond skating scene in passing through this one GAY BLADES (*) (Paul Harvey, Alan "Rocky" Lane) An old film and title; look who is in it... A talent scout looks for an athlete to star in a upcoming film. She finds a hockey star to fill the bill. Skating implied. Never heard of this one before. GENIUS (unknown) A new Disney film where the premise is a 12 year old genius going to college. He attempts to join the college hockey team. There are a number of hockey scenes and one of a 12 year old girl the kid meets; she's a figure skater. GIGI (Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevallier, Leslie Caron, Eva Gabor, Hermione Gingold) A scene where Gaston escorts Gigi to the Palais de Glace, a Paris ice rink, where Gaston's current girlfriend is taking a skating lesson. How could they skate in such formal and heavy clothes? And did Eva Gabor do her own skating? GLADIATORS (unknown) Just saw a promo for this new one. There were some scenes involving hockey. This was not the current Russel Crowe movie, GLADIATOR. GOALKEEPER ALSO LIVES ON OUR STREET, THE (*) (unknowns) A Czech film of a long-standing rivalry between two hockey teams composed of Prague pre-teens. Haven't seen it. GOLDFINGER (Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gerte Frobe) A little skating by a pair on a small rink at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami; background. Anybody recall a similar small rink at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco; or the Jack Tar Hotel for that matter, now known as Cathedral Hill Hotel? The rink is history, though; it's now a banquet room. GOOD SON, THE (Macauley Culkin) Eda - (tseinyev@geocities.com) Replied that a previous post of hers did not refer to HOME ALONE, but to this movie. She said that she happily watched and greatly enjoyed was THE GOOD SON. It was about an adorable little boy who is actually EVIL INCARNATE. Don't know about any skating here. Lorimar263@aol.com wrote: There is a skating scene where the characters played by MC and his sister are holding hands skating round and round very fast. He lets go of her hand and she flies down the pond into the thin ice, falls through and nearly drowns. GORKY PARK (John Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy) This movie opens at a skating rink in a Moscow park with a closeup of a pair of ladies' figure skates. The scene is then zoomed out to show a lot of the skaters. GREMLINS (*) (unknown) The scene of the the gremlins partying at a bar has has several views of an ongoing hockey game on the bar's TV set. Yeah, a little lame, but within the original list premise - ANY ice skating. Not quite as lame as the GRUMPY OLD MEN entry, though. GRUMPY OLD MEN (Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Daryl Hannah, Ossie Davis, Ann-Margret, Burgess Meridith, Kevin Pollack) This one is a little lame for skating content. There is a hockey game on a very snowy TV set in the ice-fishing shanty of Walter Matthau's character. HANS BRINKER (Richard Basehart) One of several Hans Brinker story versions. HANS BRINKER OR THE SILVER SKATES (unknown players) A Disney version of the Dutch classic shown very recently on the Disney channel. This is not the one Tab Hunter (a onetime competitor) did. There are a number of versions of this story floating around. HAPPY GILMORE (Adam Sandler) A failed hockey player with a hairy slapshot becomes a golf pro. Some hockey scenes shown. One scene of the primary character on a rink with a lady in figure skates. Only saw parts of this one; looked like a loser. HAPPY LANDING (Sonja Henie, Don Ameche) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. HEAT (*) (Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore) One scene has the thief that Robert DeNiro is playing wasting someone who is watching a televised hockey game. H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS (*) (Rhea Perlman) Satan, played by Perlman - who else?, sends an apprentice to steal the soul of a promising hockey player. Lots of hockey. Satan loses, as is common, in these soul-stealing yarns. HELLO LONDON (Sonja Henie, Robert Coote, Stanley Holloway) Ran across a cast list for this title; Sonja Henie appears in this list; a list of a buch of people playing themselves. No description for this title was available. HIGH TIME (Bing Crosby, Tuesday Weld, Yvonne Craig, Fabian, Gavin McLeod) This one follows Crosby's character as he absorbs a college education at age 53. Two or three scenes of college students skating on a pond; an obvious movie studio tank. All of the principals actually do skate, including Crosby and Fabian - none very well; Fabian was possibly the best of the bunch. HIT THE ICE (*) (Ginny Simms, Bud Abbott, Lou Costello) A lame bank robbery plot in which the comic pair is blamed. The real bank robbers, along with Abbott and Costello and a nurse and doctor from the hospital across the street from the target bank travel to Sun Valley, mostly to hide out. So help me, that's the base plot. There is one long skating scene where you see four of the principals skate. The nurse and doctor (probably their skating stand-ins) do opposing single lutz jumps similar to the CW lutz that Sonja Henie did. Lou Costello appears to have done some of his own comic skating in this scene such as it was. One funny sequence has him being shoved over by a little girl about four or five. She later helps him stand up and then blows on him causing him to crash again. Bud Abbott does a little shaky skating here also. The rink used does not look anything like the one at Sun Valley, though; granted, this is a 1943 production. HOCKEY NIGHT (Rick Moranis) A 14 year old girl becomes the new goalie for a boy's championship hockey team. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. Haven't seen it. HOME ALONE (*) (Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) A couple of netters (charisma@jadeinc.com and Eda - tseinyev@geocities.com) posted reminders of this one. Finally saw this one again. The kid swipes a toothbrush from some store and is chased across an outdoor ice rink in a park. This was a real put-up scene; hockey "players" with their sticks among the mob. There were a couple of figure skaters; one doing a lame back sitspin. HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK (Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stearn) Ran across this one again on the Fox Family Channel. There was some skating in this one at the Wollman Rink; that odd shaped outdoor rink in Central Park. Our two villains were planning their next caper while skating at this rink. Missed this scene the first time I saw this title; must not have been paying much attention. A few decent skaters appeared briefly in the background. HONEYSUCKLE ROSE (Amy Irving, Willie Nelson, Dyan Cannon) Tracy McCaffrey wrote: There's a scene where two principals, Irving and Nelson, are sharing an ice cream cone and watching skaters at a mall rink - anyone know which mall?. The ice cream scoops accidentally drop onto the ice, so they hastily leave. By JL - Shots of some skaters in group and private lessons. Did anyone pick up on the harness being used by one skater and her coach for a waltz jump? Anyone know the rink? I think the location was supposed to be in Texas; didn'tlook like the Galaria, though; it's the only rink name I know of in Texas. The nearest to Texas I have skated personally was in Albuquerque, NM. I SEE ICE (Roddy McDowell, Cyril Ritchard) A property man for an ice ballet troupe develops a new camera. Skating is implied. ICE AGE (*) (animation) Computer animation of Ice Age animals skating. ICE-CAPADES (Jerry Colona, Alan Mowbray, Phil Silvers) A 1941 movie; probably similar to the Henie movies. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. Haven't seen it. Quick, what are some other movies that Alan Mowbray appears in? ICE ANGEL (*) (Tara Lipinski, Nancy Kerrigan, Josee Chouinard, Elvis Sjojko, Alan Thicke, Nicholle Tom) A Family Channel, made-for-TV movie where an Olympics bound hockey player croaks and is reincarnated as a teenage girl that was in a coma from a skating injury; girl resumes figure skating, goes to the Olympics. A blatant rip-off of the 1978 HEAVEN CAN WAIT which was a re-make of a 40s film about a reincarnated boxer, HERE COMES MR. JORDAN. The basic idea was passable but the execution was a bit of a stinkeroo as were some of the characters. Four or more Olympics bound U.S. skaters with the same coach? Couldn't Family Channel have hired a consultant that knew something about how the sport works? Or the four prominent skaters in the film could have even filled the producers in on some details. All four have skated in the Olympics and have five Olympic medals, seven Worlds medals and a bunch of US Nationals, Canadian Nationals and Grand Prix medals between them. (02-May-03) The recent title, DOWN TO EARTH is another variation of this same base storyline. ICE CASTLES (Lynn Holly Johnson, Tom Skerritt, Robby Benson, Collene Dewhurst) One of the few "real" figure skating movies available; you've all probably seen this one too. If you haven't read the novelization, Lexie was written as doing several triple axels which, of course, LHJ could not begin to do. LHJ did do several double axels in this title though. ICE FOLLIES 0F 1939, THE (*) (Joan Crawford, James Stewart, Lew Ayres) TCAXEL replied: What about that all time classic, "The ice follies of 1939" starring Joan Crawford, James Stewart and I believe Lew Ayres. I believe it was one of the stinkers that practically ended Crawford's MGM career. And Jimmy Stewart was part of a skating horse! By JL - This one starts out in B & W and ends in color. Natalie Kalmus was the Technicolor director for the color portion; hers was a common name in color movies of the 30s and 40s. Crawford and Stewart both appear to do a small amount of skating themselves. ICE PAWN (*) (unknowns) A talented skater believes his only obstacle to a gold medal is his Russian rival, Misha. ICE PRINCESS (*) (Katarina Witt, Toller Cranston, Roz Sumners) Reportedly a Cinderella spin-off. ICE RINK (*) (Dolores Chaplin) A foreign movie that is a "movie-within-a-movie" genre. A director is trying to make a sports movie at a French ice rink. ICELAND (Sonja Henie, John Payne) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. INTERNAL AFFAIRS (*) (Richard Gere) A couple of brief scenes of a hockey game on the tube; yeah, I know, lame entry again. INTO THE ARMS (*) (unknown) Saw a promo about a story of 10000 jews who left Germany for the UK There was some B&W footage of skaters in Germany in the 30s. IT'S A PLEASURE (Sonja Henie, Michael O'Shea, Marie McDonald, Iris Adrian) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. This was Sonja Henie's only title in color. Surprising that none of the ten B&W Henie titles have been colorized; hear that, Ted? I have no objection to colorizing unless a movie is shot in B&W for effect or they are absolute classics such CASABLANCA. motty@ix.netcom.com emailed me about this one; said his father was in this movie. This title also featured some hockey; few players wore helmets, facemasks or padding. Even the goalies wore only the knee/leg padding; no helmets or facemasks. I noted that the Technicolor director for this title was a woman, Natalie Kalmus. Remember, this is a 1945 film, not many women in prominent production roles in those days other than costuming and a little story and screenplay writing. I have since found Natalie Kalmus to be the Technicolor Director for almost every color movie made until sometime in 1949, including GONE WITH THE WIND, THE WIZARD OF OZ and the 1948 Gene Kelly version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS. I have identified 55 titles to date in which she was the Technicolor director. In 1949 to 1950, the names of Henry Jaffa, Robert Brower, James Gooch and others, all men, start appearing as Technicolor consultants and Natalie Kalmus' name vanished. JACK FROST (*) (Michael Keaton, Kelly Preston) A 12-year old's father re-incarnated as a snowman. Only saw part of this one; a number of hockey scenes. Credits implied some other ice skating also. JANUARY MAN (Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastranonio, Alan Rickman, Susan Sarandon) Some public skating in a NYC park. The Mastranonio and Kline characters appear to do their own skating. JERSEY (*) (unknown) Saw a brief promo for a Disney movie on during Jan. 2001 based on the premise that putting on "the Jersey" transforms you into a star hockey player. Hey, is there such a jersey for figure skaters? LA PATINOIRE (unknown) simrane@hotmail.com posted about a French film... A director, the technicians, the producer, and the actors are gathered. The filming begins. Silence, they skate.... As the backdrop for this story about love and about sport is an ice rink... An unsettled set, metaphor of life, you fall, you get up, you start again. Funny and poetic. I haven't seen it yet and they showed the trailer over and over again during the Zamboni break at Miko Masters. LADY, LET'S DANCE (*) (Belita) A skater is hired as a replacement for a dance team; becomes a national star. Oscar nominated score. Haven't seen it. LAKE PLACID SERENADE (*) (Vera Ralston, Belita, Roy Rogers) Reportedly a blatant rip-off of SUN VALLEY SERENADE. The title certainly is. The presence of Vera Ralston and Belita imply some skating. Possibly also known as WINTER SERENADE. But Roy Rogers, skating? Haven't seen this one, though. LAST OF THE BLONDE BOMBSHELLS, THE (*) (Judi Dench, Olympia Dukakis) There is a short scene at an outdoor ice skating rink, presumably in London (Annabel?), at which Judi Dench's character is playing a sax. LES BOYS (Unknown) Just barely recall pieces of this one. A bunch of kids learning to play hockey, as I recall. LET IT SNOW (*) (Bernadette Peters) Iffy teen romance. This is a bit of ice skating in one scene. Haven't seen much of it. LETHAL WEAPON 3 (*) (Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo) There is a long scene at an LA Kings hockey game. Three of the principals run out on the ice during the game chasing someone. Mel Gibson caught a few body checks from some King players and Joe Pesci caught a bullet. All three knew how to deal with walking and running on ice or were taught how to do so. LIFE AFTER HOCKEY (*) (Kurt Browning) Ran across a post about this one via another thread. A Canadian movie made in the late 80s/early 90s about a guy reminiscing and fantasizing on his relationship with the game of hockey. Kurt Browning is in it playing "Richard" who came to the public skating sessions and dazzled everyone with his "fancy skating" LINEUP, THE (*) (Warner Anderson, Richard Jaeckel, Eli Wallach) This title is a movie version of the late 50s TV cop series. The movie had a scene that was shot at the old Sutro's rink in San Francisco. A number of people I know were skating extras for a nighttime shoot. The night shoot didn't make it past the editor but a fairly long scene that did make the final cut was shot in the daytime with a lot of shots of the ice rink in the backround. I did a lot of skating at that rink until it closeed in 1966. A lot of fairly good footage of the interior of the Sutro's building, museums, the entrance stairs from the street and the rink; it gives you a good feel for the size of the place. If you ever see this title (possibly on the Encore Mystery channel), please note that the rink was about 20-30 feet above the level of the beach the building was next to. The foundations of the Sutro Baths buildings can still be seen below and to the right of the Cliff House on Pt. Lobos Blvd. in San Francisco. The obligatory car chase scene jumped all over the city as most such scenes will do in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles (those always end up in the concrete lined L.A. river, right?), Chicago, New York, London, Paris, etc. Saw a movie shot in London that had someone driving over Westminster Bridge toward Parliament; the next scene had him going around the loop in front of Buckingham palace. A car chase in London traffic would seem to be something of an oxymoron, though. LITTLE NICKY (*) (Adam Sandler, Patricia Arquette, Haevey Keitel, Reese Witherspoon) Typical Adam Sandler nonsense. This time, he's one of Satan's sons mixed up in a hostile take-over of Hell. At the end, there is a glimpse of the Wollman rink in Central Park. LITTLE WOMEN [1994] (Winona Ryder) AlysFaire@aol.com wrote: Pond scene has Ryder's Jo and Christian Bale's Laurie racing on skates over the pond. Kirsten Dunst's Amy, Jo's little sister, has tagged along and falls through the ice. She's heroically rescued by Laurie and Jo. LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, THE (Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson) Two skating scenes. One in which Geena Davis' character is challenging her daughter to skate and a second where Davis' character crosses a frozen lake to shoot up a car. Geena Davis appears to have done some and possibly all of her character's skating; she is supposed to be a good all-around athlete. LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW (Kirstie Alley, John Travolta) A scene where the two featured dogs are wandering around New York City; the scene has an outdoor skating rink in the background (Rockefeller Center?) LOVE STORY (Ali McGraw, Ryan O'Neal, Ray Milland ) Joe & Mary Schirmer posted about the O'Neal character playing hockey. I vaguely remember that. And no, I don't see Weird Al Goreovic and Tipper as the models for the principals in this pup. MARGIE (Jeanne Crain, June Allyson?) Trudi Marrapodi wrote: One movie you might want to add is MARGIE. I can't remember who starred in it (possibly June Allyson?) I don't recall seeing it but I have heard of the title before. Possibly the old MY LITTLE MARGIE TV show was a spin-off? ME AND ISAAC NEWTON (*) (A documentary featuring profiles of seven scientists - Sandra Loosemore reported on this one) The skating connection is actually the source of the film's title. Quote from the review: When the twinkling-eyed theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, shown gliding on an ice rink, remarks that here "it's just me and Isaac Newton," you practically want to hug him. By JL - Saw a short clip of this title recently; Michio Kaku seems to know what he is doing on skates. MICE CAPADES A Tom & Jerry cartoon or movie? The rodent freezes the kitchen floor with a pipe pulled off of the local refrigerator. MIGHTY DUCKS, THE (Emilio Estevez) I have only seen bits and pieces of this one. There was a figure skater on this team wearing figure skates; did a spin in a game, as I recall. MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (1994) (*) (Richard Attenbourough) This 1994 production includes a scene of skaters on the Wollman Rink in Central Park; I just ran across this scene on the Family Channel as I finished watching a tape of another movie. MIRACLE ON ICE (Karl Malden) Made for TV movie about the 1980 U.S. hockey team at Lake Placid. MOMS ON STRIKE (*) (unknown) An ABC Family channel produced movie. A working mother goes on strike against her family. One of her sons is a hockey player. Hockey skating appears a couple of times. MONEY TRAIN (Robert Blake, Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Lopez) Several overhead shots of the Rockefeller Center rink and the Wollman rink in Central Park. These scenes were at the start of the movie. MURDER IN THE MUSIC HALL (*) (Vera Ralston, Ann Rutherford) A song and dance show includes some ice skating sequences; a lame murder mystery also. Aka MIDNIGHT MELODY. MVP: MOST VALUABLE PRIMATE (*) (unknown) An chimp turns out to be able to play hockey. A number of hockey scenes. MY LUCKY STAR (Sonja Henie, Richard Greene) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. MYSTERY, ALASKA (*) (Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds) AlysFaire@aol.com wrote: Small Alaska town is chosen as site of a televised game with their local team against the NY Rangers. The town _is_ hockey, with the highlight being the weekly Saturday game the team plays (against itself) to the delight of the locals. Lots of skating in this one (both hockey and I believe some locals skating on the pond). Academy Award nominee (for THE INSIDER) Crowe, learned to skate for the film (it's mostly an ensemble piece, but he's pretty much the main character). I remember reading that some of the NY Rangers appeared as themselves, but I couldn't tell you who. (By JL - This movie also featured a very old Zamboni; one of those that used a conveyer belt to transfer the ice removed into the snow bin. Usta drive one of those for 06:00 patch MANY years ago while I was\ in college. OMEN II, DAMIEN (William Holden) A bunch of kids and adults playing hockey on a rural lake. One falls through some thin ice and drowns, probably by design. ONCE AROUND (*) (Holly Hunter, Richard Dreyfus, Harvey Keitel) There are two skating scenes in this one, on a lake in the movie location area. The first, an all-hands family outing and the second with just Hunter and Dreyfus with him holding an infant; he croaks (sorry, Sandra) in this scene. All of the principals appear to do their own skating, none very well. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (George Lazenby, Dianna Rigg, Telly Savalas) Diana Rigg's character (Contessa Traci di Vicenzo) skating at a New Year festival in Switzerland as Bond skis off of the Piz Gloria to escape Blofeld. Hard to tell if Rigg was actually the skater. ON THIN ICE (Ina Bauer, Tony Sailer) Found a listing on ENCORE(TRUE sub-channel) for this 1961 movie. Haven't seen it but with Ina Bauer in it, there has to be some skating. ON THIN ICE: THE TAI BABALONIA STORY (Rachael Crawford, Christianne Hirt) A TV movie based on Tai Babalonia; probably ignited by the drug abuse story. ONE IN A MILLION (Sonja Henie, Adolph Menjou, Don Ameche) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. This one was her movie debut. ONEGIN (Ralph Fiennes) Don't know anything about this one other that it is supposed to contain some skating scenes. I saw pieces of this one, though, skating in 18th century Russia? ONLY THRILL, THE (Diane Keaton, Sam Shepard) Haven't seen the seen the whole thing so I haven't a clue what it's about; ran across a Toronto hockey rink scene. ORLANDO (*) (Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane) The main character exists through about 450 years, once changing gender, M to F, about halfway through the story and without having aged. One segment labeled 1610 took place in a icy climate. A lot of people were skating around on primitive skates which resembled Jackson Haines blades. Don't know how historically accurate this was; don't know how far back general usage of metal skate blades goes. Watched only parts of this one. Tilda Swinton was not very convincing as a young man. More convincing as a woman; surprise, surprise. PAPERBACK HERO (Keir Dullea, Elizabeth Ashley) Don't know if there is any actual skating. The Banner Blue summary mentioned hockey. Haven't seen it. PEOPLE VS. DR. KILDARE, THE (Lew Ayres, Lionel Barrymore, Red Skelton) A skater sues for mal practice. Don't know if there is actually any skating. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. I do recall hearing once that Red Skelton was supposed to be a good skater. Haven't seen this show. PLEDGE, THE (*) (Jack Nicholson) Haven't seen this one but ran across a scene that had some televised ice hockey PORTRAIT OF JENNY (*) (Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten) An artist meets a young teen in Central Park and and watches her grow into a woman throughout the movie. One scene has the principals skating in Central Park. This movie was in black & white except for the final shot. The artist's collected works are being shown and the "Portrait of Jenny" appears in color; sort of a lame forerunner of the PLEASANTVILLE production? PREACHER'S WIFE, THE (Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, Gregory Hines) A remake of THE BISHOP'S WIFE. It has been reported here that Houston and Washington do all of their own skating; can't say for sure since there are both close-ups and long shots. It looked to me like they did some of the skating. Netter lupine159@aol.com reported that a Portland, ME TV station showed tape of Houston and Washington; they could barely stand up on their skates. PROMISE KEPT: THE OKSANA BAIUL STORY, A (*) (Oksana Baiul, Miguel Ferrer) A 1994 made for TV movie. Never saw this one. RANDOM HEARTS (*) (Kristin Scott Thomas, Harrison Ford) There was a short background scene at an outdoor ice rink near the end of the movie. Is there some sort of tank set up near one of the DC buildings on the Mall for the winter? The building in the background has that DC 30s WPA look. REAL GENIUS (Val Kilmer) A scene in which a college "genius" dorm has people ice skating in the hallways on genius-created ice that sublimed like CO2 rather than melting. The inventor said he hoped that the sublimating stuff was not going to explode. RHYTHM HITS THE ICE (*) (Jerry Colona, Richard Denning) New England farm girl tries to turn a local ice show into a commercial success. Aka ICE CAPADES REVUE. Haven't seen it. ROCKY (Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith) Teresa (Traz66) posted that Rocky took his future wife ice skating on an early date. Never did see this one until I recently ran across the skating scene; only Talia Shire was wearing skates, Sly was just walking around on the ice with her. Whatsamata, Sly, too chicken to learn to skate? Skating might upstage the ole macho image? RONIN (Jean Reno, Robert DeNiro, Katarina Witt) Kat plays a Russian figure skater in this one; very little dialogue. Obviously does all of her own skating. She gets blown away on the ice, however. RONNIE AND JULIE (Teri Garr) A Showtime produced film that I just rolled to tape recently. The principals are both skaters; the girl, a figure skater and the guy, a hockey player; what else?. A fair amount of hockey scenes and a number of figure skating scenes. The feathered suit worn by the girl in the last skating scene beats out any of Oksana Baiul's or Sloot's feathered outfits. RUNNING MAN, THE (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonzo, Richard Dawson, Jim Brown) If you have seen the movie, one of the "stalkers" is a hockey skater using a metal hockey stick against the "runners" on an ice venue. He was taken out by having barbed wire wrapped around his neck; a good way to take care of those rude ersatz hockey players infecting rinks these days, maybe? SABOTAGE (unknown players) There is a scene involving a hockey game. Saw only pieces of this one. SECOND FIDDLE (Sonja Henie, Tyrone Power, Rudy Vallee) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. SENSELESS (*) (unknowns) A college student volunteers to take an experimental drug that heightens all of the senses. Among other things, he plays hockey on his college team that has never won a game; he becomes an unstoppable goalie. The film has a number of related hockey scenes. SERENDIPITY (*) (John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale) Does this one really qualify as "ice skating" by the list premise? A website article on this one said that the production used one of the plastic "ice" products over the concrete surface of the Central Park Wollman rink for the two skating scenes in this movie. The NY Post article was at: http://www.nypostonline.com/entertainment/8310.htm Haven't seen it yet. SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (*) (Brad Pitt) "LADYC712" wrote: Ever see this film? It was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, released in 1997. In it, a Tibetan character initially thinks that an ice skate is something you strap onto your foot to slice up meat. Brad Pitt and David Thewlis skate on a pond with some locals; Pitt does a little knee slide and teaches some monks to skate after Thewlis takes off with the woman they're both after. SILVER SKATES (*) (Belita, Frick and Frack [Ice Follies], Gene Turner, Irene Dare) Rick Lanha posts: A movie from the 1940s. The skating stars were Belita (I think she was from England), and Frick and Frack. The movie was shown about a year ago on TCM, and may be shown again. The .jpg version of the movie poster for "Silver Skates" was posted yesterday on: alt.binaries.pictures.movie-posters. SIX WEEKS (Mary Tyler Moore, Dudley Moore, Katherine Healy) Joe & Mary Schirmer posted that that there was a ballet dancer in this one that was supposed to be a good skater also but was actually pathetic in the movie. Dancer is reported to Katherine Healy. SKI PARTY (Frankie Avalon, Dwayne Hickman, Debora Walley, Yvonne Craig, Robert Q. Lewis) A spin-off of the Beach Party movies; staged at Sun Valley. One scene of three or four minutes has what looks like the outdoor rink at Sun Valley in the background but the sunshade appears to be missing; possibly shot on location closer to LA? The rink railing looks like the one at Sun Valley, though. SLAP SHOT (Paul Newman) A minor league hockey team decides to increase ticket sales by playing dirty. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. Seen the trailers that appear to show Paul Newman to be a reasonably competent skater. Haven't seen the whole thing, though. SNOW DAY (Chevy Chase, Chris Elliot) Saw an advertising clip from this new one that had some people skating on a pond. Looks like one of the formula National Lampoon- Chevy Chase flicks. SNOW QUEEN, THE (*) (Sandra Bezic, Toller Cranston, John Curry, Dorothy Hamill, Janet Lynn, Jojo Starbuck) A Han Christian Andersen tale on the ice set to music. Obsiously not too new; never heard of this one. SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES (Carol Heiss, The Three Stooges, Patricia Medina) The Henie wanna-be movie. Carol Heiss has to cringe every time this one is mentioned although it now could be sort of a cult classic seeing as how the Stooges are in it and in color, yet; one of only two Stooge titles I know of in color. Carol Heiss is reported to have done axels in both directions in this one but I have never found them. Were the Stooges actually on skates in the final scene? Stranger things can happen; few people are aware that Laurel & Hardy both spoke fluent Spanish and made some of their typical one-reelers in Spanish for the Latin market. SOMETIMES A HERO (unknown) Touted an action drama that centers around an ice skating rink and a promising female figure skater. "G.D." added: The script was written by Elvis Stojko's martial arts coach Glen Doyle. The actress who played the skater was Roselle Soussana. SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT (*) (full length SOUTH PARK cartoon) I'm a little reluctant to list this trashy cartoon but it does contain some ice skating that fits the premise. Dana Ginsberg wrote: After the opening musical number, the gang gathers at a frozen pond for skating; and Wendy shows off some impressive maneuvers! SPECIAL DELIVERY (*) (unknown) An adoption agancy courier loses track of an infant while in delivery to apoptive parents. There was some sort of hockey in this movie; only saw pieces of this one. SPECIES (Ben Kingsley) A genetic engineering sort of horror movie. There is a scene where a principal character is watching a televised hockey game. Yes Trudi, a bit of a reach here as is the BIG DADDY, GREMLINS and GRUMPY OLD MEN entries. SPLASH (Tom Hanks, Darryl Hannah, John Candy) The Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks characters are skating at what appears to be some rink in New York City; not Rockefeller Center, however. It looked to me like they did all of their skating; no stand-ins. Both Kevin Anderson and Joe Jaucian posted reminders about SPLASH. STARDOM (Jessica Pare, Dan Aykroyd) A female hockey player leaves the game to become a model. STAY TUNED (Pam Dawber, John Ritter, Jeffery Jones) A fantasy where the Dawber and Ritter characters are drawn through different worlds within TV. A scene where Ritter's character is playing in a televised hockey game. STEPMOM (*) (Susan Sarandon, Julia Roberts, Ed Harris) Finally saw this one. The skating was at an outdoor rink. Julia Roberts' character was taking some family photographs of her potential stepchildren and their mother at that outdoor rink. Susan Sarandon and the children were doing the skating. STRANGE BREW (Rick Moranis, Max Von Sydow) A scene with hockey players in what appear similar to Star Wars storm trooper suits, both black ones and white ones. Saw only a few scenes from this picture; appears to be a loser. SUDDEN DEATH (Jean-Claude VanDamme) The location is a Stanley Cup final game arena. Terrorists threaten to blow the place away during the game. Lots of hockey and a juicy chopper crash on the ice starring the terrorists at the end of the movie. SUN VALLEY SERENADE (Sonja Henie, John Payne, Milton Berle) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. Probably the best known of her 11 movies. Henie also skis in this one; known to be a good all-around athlete. Did you skiers note the chairlifts? All SINGLES; there are none left in operation that I know of other than the one at Mad River Glen. The last time I rode a single chairlift was at Aspen in 1968; the single formerly serving Ruthie's Run. At some areas, there are some detachable chairlifts now that can carry as many as six people. SUNDAY IN NEW YORK (Jane Fonda, Cliff Robertson, Rod Taylor, Jim Backus) The rink at Rockefeller Center is in the background during a scene at a Center restaurant next to the rink. SUSPENSE (*) (Belita, Bonita Granville, Billy Gray, Barry Sullivan) No description found; skating content implied by the presence Belita. SWEET HEARTS DANCE (*) (Susan Sarandon, Jeff Daniels, Don Johnson, Elizabeth Perkins) A movie racking two couples' relationships. There is a scene of four guys, including two of the principals skating and racing around on a frozen lake. All were wearing hockey skates. One inevitably falls through thin ice into the lake, Johnson in this case. Johnson and Daniels appear to have done their own skating. TAI BABALONIA STORY, THE (*) (unknown) A story based on the life of Tai Babalonia of Tai and Randy, 1979 World pair figure skating champions. TAXMAN, THE (*) (Joe Pantoliano, Wade Dominguez) Some sort of New York cop movie featuring some Russian speakers. Caught a scene at an ice rink; a public session. Someone comes in and shoots up the place with what looks like an MP5; there is then a long foot chase out of the rink to catch the shooter. TELEFON (Lee Remick, Charles Bronson, Tyne Daly, Sheree North, Donald Pleasence) A scene where Bronson's KGB character is coaching a boys' hockey team in Moscow. THIN ICE (Sonja Henie, Tyrone Power, Alan Hale) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. THREE DAYS (*) (Kristin Davis) Saw pieces of this movie on the Family Channel. A man's wife is to die in an accident and an angel sets him back three days in time in order to prove that he loves her. The skating is a scene at a local ice rink when they return to Boston. Didn't look like SCOB, though, one of the few rinks I know reasonably well in the Boston area. TIME MACHINE, THE (2002) (*) (Jeremy Irons, Alan Young) This incarnation of THE TIME MACHINE had some scenes of ice skating on a NYC pond near the beginning of the film. The skates shown were of the clamp-on variety. This title opens in NYC around 1900. TO DIE FOR (Nicole Kidman, Ileana Douglas) Olivia Olivares posted about this one. This one staged several interviews at an ice rink; even saw someone in the background do what looked like a triple sow. There was a marginal skater, I believe an above interviewee, skating on the frozen river into which the Kidman character was disposed of. Trudi reports: Ileana Douglas, actually took lessons so she could do her own skating here, and reportedly enjoyed it so much that she continued lessons after the movie was in the can. TOM'S MIDNIGHT GARDEN (*) (unknown) A boy fantisizes about a previous occupant of his home. There are some pond skating scenes in which the principals are skating on Jackson Haines style blades. TONYA AND NANCY: THE INSIDE STORY (*) (unknowns) Ran across this "docudrama" on Lifetime Movie Network. The familiar Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story. Some skating is obviously included. Those playing Tonya and Nancy actually sort of resemble the skaters; the same for some of the other players. Some actual footage from 1991 Nationals and 1994 Nationals is seen. TOUCH AND GO (Michael Keaton, Maria Conchita Alanzo) A pro hockey player is hitting on the mother of a juvenile who tried to mug him. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. Haven't seen it. TOWN & COUNTRY (*) (Andie McDowell, Diane Keaton, Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Gary Shandling, Charleton Heston) Recently saw the skating clip from this one. The skating was at Sun Valley. Two of the principals, Beatty and Shandling, were sitting at rinkside and Andie MacDowell skates up to them; McDowell appeared to have done her own skating. A few decent skaters appeared in the background; makes sense, Sun Valley after all. UNMARRIED WOMAN, AN (Jill Clayburgh) The Jill Clayburgh character skates at the Rockefeller Center rink while "finding herself". VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (Patty Duke Astin, Lee Grant, Susan Hayward, Martin Milner, Barbara Parkins, Sharon Tate) A short small town pond scene at the start and an overhead view of the Rockefeller Center rink later in the movie. WARHEAD (*) (unknowns) A white separatist mob takes over a hokey missle launch site and threatens to launch if demands are not met. There is a long scene of an agent/terrorist shoot-out during a hockey game. The game ridicuously goes on during the shoot-out; players and fans oblivious to the shooting;full auto weapons, yet. In one scene, one of the shooters is pulled along on the ice on his street shoes in by a player. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Carrie Fisher) Quick shot of someone doing a camel spin at the Rockefeller Center rink and a shot of the Wollman rink in Central Park; both have been in a number of movies. WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (Sandra Bullock, Peter Boyle) Public skating in a Chicago park - background. Joe Jaucian pointed out that the location here was Chicago rather than NYC. Ya gotta pay attention all the time. WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE (Halle Berry, Vivicea Fox) Ran across a hockey scene in the beginning of this movie; haven't seen the whole thing. WINTERTIME (Sonja Henie) Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. YOUNGBLOOD (Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Ed Lauter) A minor league hockey player has to prove himself to his teammates. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. A lot of hockey here. Cartoon on Disney Channel (*) Ran across a black and white Betty Boop cartoon featuring her skating on a pond. She was doing Sonja Henie style axels over holes in the ice. The animators also had her doing camel spins, change sitspins, spirals, etc. The animators apparently knew something about skating or learned about it. Never learned the name of the cartoon, though. ***************************************************************************** Quad Roller Skating In Movies: BIG BRAWL, THE (Jackie Cahn) Typical Jackie Chan thing. The roller skating is a scene of a bunch of guys skating in alleys wearing what looked like jump suits. BOOGIE NIGHTS (Burt Reynolds) A sleazy attempt at a prime time X-rated film. One scene I ran across surfing was a lady in shorts and quad skates working on seducing someone. This flick appears to be a definite loser. EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS 2 (unknown) Don't know anything about this one; saw a post about it in the past. FIRST KID (Sinbad) Sinbad is a Secret Service agent assigned to the son of the president. Flippen, Lena Horne) A scene of Gene Kelly skating in the street; possibly inspired by the Singin' in the Rain street scene? What kind of ice skater would Gene Kelly have made? He reportedly really liked Kurt Browning's SINGIN' IN THE RAIN number on ice. KANSAS CITY BOMBER (Raquel Welch) Roller Derby skater story; never saw it. L.A. STORY (Steve Martin) Don't know anything about this one; saw a post about it in the past. Don't know anything about this one; saw a post about it in the past. ROLLER BOOGIE (Linda Blair) Don't know anything about this one; saw a post about it in the past. Quick, how many people have played the part of James Bond and who are they? Also, who has appeared in the greatest number of James Bond movies (almost every one of them)? Louis Epstein noted that something called the Figure Skating Historical Society Journal documents ice skating in many movies. I've never seen or have been able to find this publication. _________________________________________________________________________ -jl John Be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it
