Act of the Heart 1970 Actors- Genevieve Bujould, Donald Sutherland Synopsis- Martha Hayes, a woman fanatically devoted to Jesus Christ, ekes out a meager existence in Montreal, Canada. As a singer in an Anglican Church choir, Martha meets and is fascinated by Father Michael Ferrier, an Augustinian monk who's the guest conductor for an interfaith concert. How far is Martha willing to go to show her devotion to God? John's Comments- Dirk - posted the following: Paul Almond directed then-wife Bujould in a story of a priest's love and abandonment of cloth, for a parishoner. Bujould's self-immolation at end is widely regarded as an overdone plot device. But the theme and imagery of fire and ice opens with their budding romance on skates at a local Montreal pond - a long and charming scene. IMDB Rating 5.8 Agnes of God 1985 Actors- Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft, Meg Tilly Synopsis- At a convent, fragile, unearthly Sister Agnes gives birth (she says it's a virgin birth), but the child dies. The police soon are involved because of the death of the baby. However, the main conflict is between Mother Superior Miriam Ruth, who wants Agnes left alone, and Dr. Martha Livingston, a psychiatrist determined to help Agnes gain a stronger grasp on reality and uncover any wrongdoers. John's Comments- A scene where a bunch of nuns are skating on a pond at their convent; Canada, remember. You ever seen nuns in their complete traditional "uniforms" SKIING? The two I encountered at Heavenly Valley one day knew what they were about - some Austrian order; blue habits rather than black like most orders or the mostly white like the Dominicans. Flying veils as they wailed on down the slopes - an unusual sight. IMDB Rating: 6.3 Airbourne 1993 Actors- Shane McDermott, Seth Green Synopsis- Mitchell Goosen is sixteen/seventeen year old kid from California who is sent to stay with his aunt, uncle, and cousin in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mitchell then goes to school and gets on the bad side of the big guys on campus aka the high school hockey players. Mitchell and Wiley end up enduring weeks of torture from the guys. Then, the big guys and Mitchell and Wiley have to learn to get along to try to beat the Central High School rivals in a competition down Devil's Backbone. John's Comments- A rollerblader flick that contains a lengthy ice hockey scene. Haven't seen the whole thing; just stumbled across the hockey scene. IMDB Rating 5.1 Aldrich Ames: The Traitor Within 1998 Actors- Timothy Hutton, Joan Plowright, Elizabeth Pena Synopsis- Fact-based story about a 90's espionage case that was chronicled as the worst case of espionage in US history. John's Comments- A scene where Ames is teaching his son to skate and play hockey. IMDB Rating6.3 Apartment for Peggy 1948 Actors- Jeanne Cram, William Holden, Edmund Gwenn Synopsis- Professor Henry Barnes decides he's lived long enough and contemplates suicide. His attitude is changed by Peggy Taylor, a chipper young mother-to-be who charms him into renting out his attic as an apartment for her and her husband Jason, a former GI struggling to finish college. John's Comments- Several scenes, one long, that have an outdoor ice rink at a college in the background. Caught one skater doing a Besti Squat; an ugly move then (~1950) as well as now. IMDB Rating 6.8 Amelie 2001 Actors- Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus Synopsis- Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love. John's Comments- SallyH (MASHKG)] reported seeing a French film featuring Rudy Galindo. I must assume that he is doing some skating. -oiseauxbleu writes: So, has anyone seen the movie Amelie (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain)? There's a 2-3 second snippet of Rudy Galindo's On Golden Pond on a television - illustrating the narrative about one of the character's enjoyment of figure skating on TF1. IMDB Rating 8.7 At First Sight 1999 Actors- Val Kilmer, Mira Sorvino, Kelly McGillis Synopsis- A driven Manhattan architect, Amy, relaxes at a resort and falls for the masseur, Virgil, blind since age 3 and assisted by his spinster sister. He helps Amy hear and sense the world, giving her new spirit and a burst of creativity. Over the sister's objections, Amy takes Virgil to New York for new, radical surgery. He regains his sight. He's disoriented and must learn to process these new images. Finding his place in a seeing world strains his relation with Amy; his absent father wants to connect with him now that he can see; then, retinal disease threatens to undo the surgery. Can love survive, will he find his new place and his old tranquillity, can Amy accommodate limits? John's Comments- The principal regains his sight lost in childhood. Two skating scenes have him sort of playing hockey one of them at night while still blind. There are also two scenes at hockey games while his sight is restored. The second movie I have seen Kilmer skating in; the other was REAL GENIUS. IMDB Rating 5.7 The Diary of Anne Frank Actors- Not sure of which film or TV version is referenced Synopsis- The story of a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family who are forced into hiding by the Nazis during World War II. John's Comments- Trudi Marrapodi reported that this title has a dream sequence in which Ann Frank was dreaming of some skaters since she was supposed to have had an ambition to be a champion skater. IMDB Rating 7.0 Attack of the 5'2" Woman 1994 Actors- Julie Brown Synopsis- Spoof-miester, Julie Brown does a musical send-up of Tonya Harding and Lorena Bobbit's debutante debacles. John's Comments- A TV movie made for one of the comedy channels with Tonya Harding and Lorena Bobbit as the subjects. I vaguely recall this one as being fairly gross. Tonya Harding is pretty short; I still have a newspaper photo on my wall of the U.S. figure skating team at Lillihammer and she is the shortestperson of the 12. From a post about it: Yes, the movie was a gross, crude, disgusting, and highly hilarious endeavor in which "Tonya Hardly" gets the last laugh by getting plastic surgery and coming back as an Asian-American skater from Hawaii, with the USFSA none the wiser. And the Lorena Bobbitt story was just as gross-out funny. IMDB Rating 4.5 Autumn in New York 2000 Actors- Richard Gere, Wynona Ryder Synopsis- Romantic drama about an aging playboy who falls for a sweet, but terminally ill, young woman. John's Comments- Finally saw some of this release. One of the principals, Ryder, is seen ice skating at what appears to be the Rockefeller Center rink. When you see this one, note the close-up of the feet doing the tiny waltz jump, those look like a fairly decent set of skates; medium grade stock boots at least and with a halfway decent set of blades. Did Ryder shoplift these? Tee hee. Ryder last appeared skating in the 1994 remake of LITTLE WOMEN. IMDB Rating 4.7 Babycakes 1999 Actors- Ricki Lake, Craig Shaeffer, Betty Buckley, John Karlen Synopsis- Grace is an overweight mortuary cosmetician who falls in love with Rob, a handsome subway train conductor who doesn't even know she exists. When she finally devises a way to meet him, they discover that although they are physically different, they have a lot more in common than they think. John's Comments- Don't know anything out this one; both OliviaOlivares and Tracie Bezerra posted notes about it. Trudi Marrapodi fleshed this one out a bit: "Fat girl" (the voice of Camryn Manheim is telling me to put it this way, folks) with low self-esteem is dumbstruck by gorgeous man she sees jumping and spinning at an ice rink, and plots to figure out where he works (on the subway), meet him, and steal him away from his skinny, bitchy fiancee while the fiancee is out of town. And she does. In the process, she stops trying to hide her real self and lets her true personality shine. IMDB Rating 5.3 Bambi 1942 Actors- Hardie Albright, Stan Alexander, Peter Behn Synopsis- The animated story of Bambi, a young deer hailed as the 'Prince of the Forest' at his birth. As Bambi grows, he makes friends with the other animals of the forest, learns the skills needed to survive, and even finds love. One day, however, the hunters come, and Bambi must learn to be as brave as his father if he is to lead the other deer to safety. John's Comments- Not really ice skating but the scene of Bambi and Thumper on the ice implies ice skating. Olivia Olivares reminded me of this one. IMDB Rating 7.5 Batman and Robin 1997 Actors- Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney, Chris O'Donnel Synopsis- Freeze plans on taking Gotham City hostage by freezing the town into a permanent winter. In the meantime, a new seductive villainous, Poison Ivy, has appeared to cause a rift in the partnership of Batman & Robin. While all this is happening, faithful butler Alfred is dying.Mr. Freeze holds the key to save his life. Enter Batgirl to help save the day. John's Comments- A surreal hockey scene near the beginning of the movie. B & R have blades that pop from their boots; wasn't that convenient? They must be encountering crooks on ice all the time. Couldn't tell if Clooney or O'Donnell did their own skating. Trudi wrote that Robin Cousins was originally supposed to be the skating consultant here but it never happened. IMDB Rating 3.6 Beautiful Girls 1996 Actors- Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, Annabeth Gish Synopsis- Beautiful Girls is about a group of small-town friends joining up for their first high school reunion. They find themselves evaluating their lives and their relationships. It's about growing up and facing reality. John's Comments- One of the main characters is talking to a local teeny-bopper while she is skating at a town pond IMDB Rating 7.1 Bell, Book, and Candle 1958 Actors- James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs Synopsis- Gillian Holroyd is just your average, modern-day, witch, living in a New York apartment with her Siamese familiar, Pyewacket. But one day a handsome publisher, Shep Henderson walks into her building and Gillian decides she wants him--especially as it turns out he's marrying Merle Kittridge, an old poison penpal from Gillian's college days. So, Gillian casts a spell over Shep. But her powers are in danger of being exorcised by something strong than the bell-book-and-candle routine: Love. John's Comments- A short scene at a New York park rink where the characters portrayed by Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart are supposed to be skating. In their closeup, the skating had to be a rear projection shot. IMDB Rating 6.7 Beauty and the Beast: An Enchanted Christmas 1997 Actors- Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry Synopsis- Belle prepares the castle for Christmas against Beast's wishes, trying to bring him happiness for the season... John's Comments- I just saw a clip promoting this sequel. We see Belle and the Beast ice skating in one scene. IMDB Rating 5.7 The Belle of New York 1952 Actors- Fred Astaire, Vera Ellen, Marjorie Main, Keenan Wynn Synopsis- In squeaky-clean New York at the turn of the century, playboy Charlie Hill falls so much in love that he can walk on air. The object of his affections is beautiful Angela Bonfils, a mission house worker in the Bowery. He promises to reform his dissolute life, even trying to do an honest day's work. John's Comments- morag.carnie posted ... The only movie (to my knowledge) in which Fred Astaire donned ice skates. It happens in the "Winter" section of the "Currier and Ives" number, and Fred and Vera-Ellen re-create a rural skating on the pond scene. There's some decorous stroking (Fred could skate backwards, at least), and Vera-Ellen does a spiral, but not much more than that. (by JL -Please do recall that Fred Astaire did a roller skating scene with Ginger Rogers in SWING TIME.And wouldn't Vera-Ellen have been delicious in some of the skating dresses we see today! Ran across some still photos from this movie on a website featuring Vera-Ellen) IMDB Rating 5.5 Best Friends 1982 Actors- Goldie Hawn, Burt Reynolds Synopsis- When a professional couple who have lived & worked together for many years finally decide to marry, their sudden betrothal causes many unexpectedly funny and awkward difficulties. They soon find that being married is often quite different from being "best friends." John's Comments- A scene in a small snow covered town with Reynolds watching a kid's league hockey game. IMDB Rating 5.1 The Bishop's Wife 1947 Actors- Cary Grant, Loretta Young, David Niven Synopsis- An episcopal Bishop, Henry Brougham, has been working for months on the plans for a new cathedral paid for by a stubborn widow. He is losing sight of his family and of why he became a churchman in the first place. Enter Dudley, an angel sent to help him. Dudley does help everyone he meets, but not necessarily in the way they would have preferred. With the exception of Henry, everyone loves him, but Henry begins to believe that Dudley is there to replace him, at work, and in his families affections, as Christmas approaches. John's Comments- A scene where the Cary Grant and Loretta Young characters are ice dancing on a simulated pond. It was pointed out by Margaret Burwell that these skaters were doing a part of the Kilian. Looking at the tape again, that was the case. I also noted that Loretta Young and Cary Grant did some of the skating themselves, although not the dancing. IMDB Rating 7.6 Blades of Courage 1988 Actors- Tom Butler, Ayssum Court Synopsis- Lori makes her way to Olympic training camp, only to be seduced by her unscrupulous coach. Having succumbed to the pressures of training, her coach and the media, she rises to the occasion and fights back, taking victory on her own terms. John's Comments- (Christianne Hirt) Just saw a post regarding this one. Haven't seen it. As has been mentioned in some previous periodic threads, this is simply a U.S. home video release title for a CBC television film called SKATE! It stars Christianne Hirt, who can really skate and who also appears as Tai Babilonia's friend in Tai's biopic. Plot: Canadian ladies' skater who appears to be on her way to the top moves to Toronto to take from famous Coach from Hell, following which her life begins going to pot. Eventually, after dropping out of skating for a time, she drops back in with a different coach, and wins Canadians. IMDB Rating 6.9 Borrowed Hearts 1997 Actors- Roma Downey, Eric McCormack Synopsis- Kathleen's a hard-working single mother, who's saving to buy a house for herself and her daughter, Zoe. Sam's a businessman who has to pretend he has a family in order to close a deal with the mysterious Javier Del Campo. Sam owns the company that Kathleen works for, and as her boss, manages to convince her to help him out. But Del Campo is more than he seems, and it just might be Zoe who's making the real deal to get a new home for herself, her mother, and Sam. John's Comments- A scene with the principles at an ice rink; looked like it was a fairly extensive outdoor skating scene possibly. Still have not seen all of this one. TVG description: A wealthy guy hires a single mom and her daughter to pose as a family to impress a business asscociate (Elizondo) with an interest in family values. Still have not seen all of this one yet. IMDB Rating 6.3 A Boy Named Charlie Brown 1969 Actors- Peter Robbins, Pamelyn Ferdin, Glenn Gilger Synopsis- Charlie Brown makes his way to the national spelling bee finals. John's Comments- Dana Ginsberg wrote: While following Linus around New York City on a desperate search for his lost blanket, Snoopy stops off at Rockefeller Center, first to skate a beautiful four-minute routine, and then to play hockey. By JL: Please do recall that Sparky Schultz was grooming Snoopy for the Grenoble Olympics; he drew Snoopy doing double axels in some of the daily strips of the time. IMDB Rating 6.9 Breaking the Ice 1938 Actors- Bobby Breen, Charles Ruggles, Dolores Costello Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- A skating troupe on tour. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. (Added) Plot has a boy running away to pursue a singing career. Irene Dare listed as a skater but I have never heard of her until recently. Haven't seen it. IMDB Rating NONE Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille) 1996 Actors- Sylvie Testud, Tatjana Trieb, Howie Seago, Emmanuelle Laborit Synopsis- Since the earliest days in her childhood Lara has had a difficult but important task. Both her parents are deaf-mute and Lara has to translate from sign-language to the spoken word and vice versa when her parents want to communicate with other people. Getting older and more mature she becomes interested in music and starts to play clarinet very successfully. However her parents are deaf, they cannot share Lara's musical career. The day comes when Lara has to decide between her parents and her own ambitions John's Comments- Johanna.Ehrmann wrote: I recently saw a German movie made several years ago called Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille) in German. It opens with a scene of a woman skating and a young girl watching her. The woman is definitely a recreational skater, but she knows how to do some turns and a jump--can't remember what at the moment.--Johanna IMDB Rating 7.3 Big Daddy 1999 Actors- Adam Sandler, Joey Lauren Adams, Jon Stewart Synopsis- Adam Sandler plays a 30 year old who, after his friend gets married and leaves him alone, begins looking for fulfillment. He decides to adopt a five year old boy, but ends up with a lot more than he bargained for. John's Comments- A seeming n'er-do-well takes care of a young orphan for a while. There is a scene in his apartment with a number of views of a New York Rangers hockey game on the TV set. IMDB Rating 5.9 A Brother's Promise: The Dan Jansen Story 1996 Actors- Jayne Brook, Len Cariou, Christina Cox, Matt Keeslar Synopsis- Based on the true story of Speed Skater Dan Jansen and the loving relationship with his sister Jane. We see Dan go through the motions before and after losing his sister, then see him rise to glory winning the Gold Medal in the '94 Olympics. Kathy Bates Synopsis- Bruno is the story of a unique young boy genius, Bruno (Alex D. Linz), whose expression of his own individuality leads his family and community along an emotional journey. By the time he reaches his final destination, Bruno's story becomes a fable of the importance of each person's uniqueness and originality. John's Comments- Fable about a Catholic school spelling champ that is something of a cross- dresser. Ran across a hockey scene in this one. This kid appeared to be the kid from HOME ALONE THREE. IMDB Rating 6.2 By the Light of the Silvery Moon 1953 Actors- Doris Day, Gordon MacRae Synopsis- The trials and tribulations of the Winfield family in small town Indiana as Marjorie Winfield's boyfriend, William Sherman, returns from the Army after W.W.I. Bill & Marjorie's on-again, off-again provide the backdrop for other family issues, primarily brought on by little brother Wesley's overactive imagination and tall tales. John's Comments- A scene where a lot of locals are skating on a simulated pond; D. Day and G. MacRae are both actually skating here. Once heard that MacRae was a serious ice dancer but it wasn't obvious here. IMDB Rating 6.2 Canadian Bacon 1995 Actors- Alan Alda, John Candy, Reha Perlman Synopsis- The US economy is in a rut, and so is the president's approval rating. What we need is a good war, but the Russians aren't interested. Hey -- how about that big polite country to the north? Niagara Fall Sheriff Bud B. Boomer takes this all a bit too seriously, though. John's Comments- Saw a little more of this one recently. There was a little skating beyond the hockey scene I first reported, possibly on that canal in Montreal. There were also a couple of scenes in which skates appear; one in which someone was sharpening some skates and one showing someone throwing a pair of skates away. IMDB Rating 5.3 Carmen on Ice 1989 Actors- Brian Boitano, Brian Orser, Katarina Witt Synopsis- The telling of the classic story of Carmen John's Comments- Joe & Mary Schirmer posted that this HBO event was also released as a movie. IMDB Rating 5.2 Carnal Knowledge 1971 Actors- Candice Bergen, Art Garfunkle, Jack Nicholson Synopsis- Sandy and Jonathan are roomates in college who's experiences with women offer a contrast, confronting the sexual revolution with varying degrees of success and disaster. John's Comments- Several netters (Janet, Trudi, Edie/Devon, Fred, Posterboy) posted notes about this one. While Nicholson is pondering the "ideal woman" (There ain't no sech animal) an image is added of a woman dressed in white skating at Rockefeller Center. Trudi Marrapodi suggested that the skater is none other than JoJo Starbuck. Finally saw this movie; a loser. The skater in white did not really look good enough to me be a former National pairs champion though she did, as Jack Nicholson noted, posess "quite a pair". Elite skaters tend not to be so well endowed, though. Ah, what a THIN WonderBra or it's equivalent can do for a lady. IMDB Rating 6.8 Champions-A Love Story 1979 Actors- Jimmy McNichol, Joy DeLuc, Shirley Knight, Jennifer Warren Synopsis- Two teens become romantically involved as they train for a skating championship. John's Comments- (TV Movie) Margaret Burwell posted about this one originally. Trudi sent the following: Teenage American female skater with a Skate Mom from Hell meets hockey- playing boy and persuades him to form a pair with her. His dad and her mom are both against it but soon they both see how much it means to the kids, and they get on board. But just when the pair is starting to get somewhere in national competition and, yes, fall in love--the boy dies in a plane crash. The girl now must find the strength to continue with her singles career in his memory. IMDB Rating 7.0 Chasing Amy 1997 Actors- Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams Synopsis- Holden and Banky are best friends and authors of a popular comic book called "Bluntman and Chronic" (based on Jay and Silent Bob of "Clerks" and "Mallrats" fame). Holden falls in love with Alyssa, also a comic book artist, who happens to be a lesbian. Holden's new relationship with Alyssa strains his life-long friendship with Banky, and soon the relationship between Holden and Alyssa hits a wall due to Holden not being able to deal with her past. John's Comments- Ran across a short scene by the principals at a hockey game. The movie looked like a loser. IMDB Rating 7.6 The Christmas Angel 1998 Actors- Olivia Newton-John, Chip Davis, Dorothy Hamill, Elvis Stojko, Rudy Galindo, Tonia Kwiatkowski Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- Rebekah Branch wrote: excerpt from the back of th DVD: "The Christmas Angel is a family story, hosted by Olivia Newton-John and Chip Davis. This made-for-tv special is the most elaborate ice skating sho ever produced.....The timeless Christmas music by Manheim Steamroller sets the perfect background for this ice skating spectacular. The Christmas Angel is a classic tale of good triumphing over evil, told in an enchanting way with ice skaters portraying the characters......" The plot is rather thin, but that skating is absolutely superb. IMDB Rating 7.2 Cool Runnings 1993 Actors- John Candy Synopsis- Several Jamacian athletes, determined to make it to the Olymipics, decide to form the first Jamacian Bobsled team. They enlist the help of an disgraced American bobsledder to whip them into shape, and convince the world that their attempt is genuine, and not a potential embaressment. John's Comments- A scene including figure skaters, speed skaters and hockey players at the Calgary Olympics. The Jamacian bobsled team was trying to learn to run on ice in this scene. IMDB Rating 6.3 Countess of Monte Cristo 1948 Actors- Sonja Henie Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- Her last movie. Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. IMDB Rating 3.1 The Cutting Edge 1992 Actors- DB Sweeney, Moira Kelly Synopsis- Kate is talented and spoiled. She and her coach have eliminated her most recent figure skating partner with little time to find a replacement. None of the candidates will do, and her coach finds a college hockey player with no figure skating experience as a last possibility. The two are from totally different worlds and argue constantly, but his strong work ethic brings both her father and her coach around. The two enter international competition trying out a new routine that is dangerous for each of them as their respect for each other finally begins to grow. John's Comments- A lot of real skating; I assume you have all seen this one at least once. Kelly and Sweeney do some of the skating themselves. In fact, I saw a post some time ago from Timothy Mizerak suggesting that the skater doing the rudimentary single axel as Kate entered her rink late one morning was actually Sweeney; can't tell from the tape, though. Also, I have been told that Moira Kelly was once a competitive skater. I have seen posts since that dispute this; that Kelly was just a fast learner but according to Robin Cousins, might well have become a first class competitor had she started early enough. She certainly could project the stereotypical competitor attitude. IMDB Rating 6.4 D2-The Might Ducks 1994 Actors- Emilio Estevez Synopsis- After hurting his knee in an accident in the minor leagues, Gordon Bombay returns home. Jan has been promoting him as a good coach, and now, he has become the coach of Team USA. The Ducks are gathered again and joined by five new players- Dean Portman (a big bully), Ken Wu (an ex-figure skater), Julie Gaffney (a REALLY good goalie), Louis Mendooza (a "speedster"), and Dwyane Robertson (a cowboy, good puck handler). They are up against the world- including the big bullies from Iceland. Can they win against the world? John's Comments- I've seen only pieces of this one. Hockey, obviously. IMDB Rating 4.7 D3-The Mighty Ducks 1996 Actors- Emilio Estevez Synopsis- In the third episode of this series, the Ducks get scholarships to Eden Hall Academy, a high ranking prep school. But as freshmen, they will have to face the snob varsity team... John's Comments- I've seen only pieces of this one. Hockey, obviously. IMDB Rating 4.3 Dad, the Angel, and Me 1995 Actors- Judge Reinhold, Stephi Lineburg, Alan King, Carol Kane, Eve Gordon, Shirley Knight Synopsis- A divorced doctor finds himself in real trouble living with his daughter alone now. But fortunately a guardian angel is watching over the lives of both of them. John's Comments- Susan Burr posted: Last night, did anyone watch "DAD, THE ANGEL AND ME" on Fox Family? The little girl whose mother died was a skater. Some of it was kind of realistic because she went to practices early every morning before school. She was supposed to be 10 years old and was working on her triple toe though, and carried her skates tied together over her shoulder. Why do they always do that in movies? Real skaters don't do that. By JL - I haven't seen this one and I have NEVER carried my skates tied together over my shoulder in 50 year of skating. IMDB Rating 4.9 Death to Smoochy 2002 Actors- Robin Williams, Edward Norton, Catherine Keeno, Danny DeVito Synopsis- Fired in disgrace, kids show host Randolph Smiley finds himself out on the street, while his replacement Sheldon Mopes, finds himself on the fast track to success with a new hit show as the proud purple rhino Smoochy. But things take a turn for the worst when Sheldon finds out that some of the people that he works with, and some he doesn't know he's working for, are all in it for the money. Meanwhile, Randolph is slowly turning insane with his only thoughts focusing on killing Smoochy and getting back to his life of luxury. John's Comments- A kiddie TV character is replaced by a character along the lines of Barney and the older character wants to get even. A promo clip showed some of the characters ice skating a number of times. Added 13-Apr-03 by JL: There is a character inspired ice show in this title with a lot of show style skating. Elvis Stojko had a piece of this one. The two principal characters do something of a head-to-head competition at the end of the movie. The Smoochy character does a pretty fair axel and split jump - in costume. The stand-ins had to be fair skaters. This title has not surfaced in close to a year and a half since I first saw previews of it on a BA flight to London, 08-Sep-01. IMDB Rating 6.3 Delirious 1991 Actors- John Candy, Mariel Hemmingway, Emma Samms Synopsis- Jack is the head writer for a successful soap opera, and he's sweet on the show's star, lovely Laura. It's easy for everyone but Jack to see that she's playing him for a sap. But a conk on the head brings Jack some new insights - and some new powers. He finds himself in Ashford Falls, site of his fictional soap opera -- and everything he writes comes true! It's a fantastic opportunity to get Rachel, Laura's character, to fall in love with him. But life isn't easy even in the fictional world, and even when you're the author! John's Comments- This one is a soap opera fantasy. The long closing scene has Hemmingway and Candy skating alone on a rink that I think is in Central Park. I believe that this rink also appeared in the opening of MONEY TRAIN. Triangular shape looked the same. Hemmingway was wearing black figure skates and Candy was in hockey skates. Both were doing their own skating. IMDB Rating 5.0 Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team 2001 Actors- Members of the team, etc Synopsis- Story of the 1980 US Hockey team John's Comments- I have seen some promos for a new movie based on the U.S. hockey win over the USSR at Lake Placid in 1980. We are asked, "where were you" when this game took place. As it happened, I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the time. A toll collector exitedly told me that the U.S. hockey team had just beaten the Russians; as they did at Squaw Valley in 1960. The condition of the scoreboard at Blyth Arena at Squaw was preserved until the arena roof was allowed to accumulate so much snow one winter that it collapsed. I skated many times at Blyth Arena and always saw that score. Oddly enough, I worked several summers at the stock brokerage started by Charlie Blyth, a onetime partner of Dean Witter; the 1960 Olympics arena at Squaw Valley was named for Blyth. IMDB Rating 8.6 Don King: Only in America 1997 Actors- Ving Rhames Synopsis- Biography of fight promoter Don King follows his rise from a street goon convicted of strong arm tactics to a minor music promoter to pulling off his first major fight with Muhammed Ali for a charity. John's Comments- A scene at an ice rink with the Don King character skating at some rink in his white pimp suit. Some skater in the background did a couple of creditable spins. Only saw pieces of this one. IMDB Rating 7.1 Don't Shove 1919 Actors- Harold Lloyd, Bebe Daniels, Bud Jamison Synopsis- Harold and his rival fight over Bebe on her birthday, first at her home and then at a nearby skating rink. John's Comments- A silent film where Lloyd's character tries to impress his date at an ice rink. Haven't seen it. IMDB Rating Downhill Racer 1969 Actors- Robert Redford, Gene Hackman Synopsis- Quietly cocky Robert Redford joins U.S. ski team as downhill racer and clashes with the team's coach, played by Gene Hackman. Lots of good skiing action leading to an exciting climax. John's Comments- A speed skating shot at some imaginary Olympics. IMDB Rating 5.9 The Duchess of Idaho 1950 Actors- Ester Williams, Van Johnson Synopsis- Ellen Hallit is in love with her playboy boss, Douglas Morrison, but is too timid to do anything about it. To help her, her roommate Chris decides to step in, and devises a plan. Chris follows Morrison on his trip to Sun Valley, Idaho and plays the overattentive female, hoping that he will send for Ellen (who often played his "fiancée" when he had a female he couldn't discourage otherwise.) Complications arise when Chris catches the eye of band leader Dick Layne, and finds herself caught in a triangle between the two men. John's Comments- A short background of the rink at Sun Valley. This movie is sort of a swimming version of Sun Valley Serenade. IMDB Rating 5.5 Ed TV 1999 Actors- Matthew McConaughey, Jenna Elfman Synopsis- A comedy about a video store clerk Ed (Matthew McConaughey) whose life is thrown into chaos when he agrees to let an executive of a televison studio (Ellen DeGeneres) film him for 24 hours. John's Comments- Saw a short clip from this one that showed a rink with the movie principal driving a Zam around on a hockey arena; there is some sort of hockey team mascot skating in this scene. IMDB Rating 6.3 Ellery Queen: Too Many Suspects 1975 Actors- Jim Hutton, David Wayne Synopsis- A stylish movie based on the book "Fourth Side of the Triangle" by Ellery Queen. John's Comments- Julia Linthicum posted a response about the TV movie that served as the pilot for the short-lived "Ellery Queen" TV show from the 1970s. It had a short skating scene at the Rockefeller Center ice rink with Ellery and his niece. The niece was doing her "Sonja Henie act" and Ellery had his nose in a book. Haven't seen it. IMDB Rating 6.6 Dumbo 1941 Actors- Herman Bing, Verna Felton Synopsis- The stork delivers a baby elephant to Mrs Jumbo, veteran of the circus, but the newborn is ridiculed because of his truly enormous ears and dubbed "Dumbo". Dumbo is relegated to the circus' clown acts; it is up to his only friend, a mouse, to assist Dumbo to achieve his full potential. John's Comments- The pink elephant scene in which Dumbo and his rodent pal are sloshed contains some ice skating pink elephants. IMDB Rating 7.4 End of Days 1999 Actors- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Byrne, Robin Tunney, Kevin Pollak, CCH Pounder Synopsis- What Jericho does not know is that Satan himself roams the Streets of New York in order to mate with the chosen girl. If he manages to do so in the last hour before the next millenium, his only chance to get out of his eternal prison is gone and he has to wait another thousand years. Now it is up to atheist Jericho to find the girl before Satan does and protect her from harm. But Jericho does not have a clue who he's up against... John's Comments- One of many end-of-millenium, end-of-the-world sagas. There is a short scene of skaters at the Rockefeller Center rink while Arnold is wandering around New York. IMDB Rating 5.3 Everything Happens at Night 1939 Actors- Sonja Henie, Ray Milland, Robert Cummings Synopsis- Two newspapermen, one British (Milland) and one American (Cummings) discover a murdered political commentator and compete to tell his story. They also fall in love with his daughter (Henie). John's Comments- Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. IMDB Rating 5.7 Fantasia 1940 Actors- Deems Taylor Synopsis- Disney animators set pictures to classical music as Leopold Stokowski conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra. "The Sorceror's Apprentice" features Mickey Mouse as an aspiring magician who oversteps his limits. "The Rite of Spring" tells the story of evolution, from single-celled animals to the death of the dinosaurs. "Dance of the Hours" is a comic ballet performed by ostriches, hippos, elephants and alligators. "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Ave Maria" set the forces of darkness and light against each other as a devilish revel is interrupted by the coming of a new day. John's Comments- Disney classic full-length animation)The second music sequence in the film features some Tinkerbell genre fairies, or pixies if you prefer, ice skating. Fantasia has to be the source of Tinkerbell for the Peter Pan feature; same pixie dust, wings, flight motions, wand waving, etc. IMDB Rating 7.8 Face Off 1971 Actors- Trudy Young, Art Hindle Synopsis- Love story involving a Canadian Professional Hockey Player(Billy Duke) and a hippy folk singer(Sherry Nelson). Their union is tumultuous, as both try to come to terms with their differences in careers and lifestyles. They realize too late that they both love each other. Shot in/around Toronto, Ontario CANADA and includes good use of vintage NHL footage. John's Comments- Different lifestyles hamper the romance of a hockey player and a singer. IMDB Rating 5.2 Falling in Love 1984 Actors- Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Harvey Keitel, Jane Kaczmarek, Dianne Wiest Synopsis- During shopping for Christmas, Frank and Molly run into each other. This fleeting short moment will start to change their lives, when they recognize each other months later in the train home and have a good time together. Although both are married and Frank has two little kids, they meet more and more often, their friendship becoming the most precious thing in their lives. John's Comments- Two people in separate boring marriages fall in love. There is a scene at the opening of the film at the Rockefeller Center ice rink at Christmas; a real mob scene on that tiny rink. Another Rockefeller Center Rink scene appears later in the movie; the rink is mobbed again. IMDB Rating 5.9 Family Man 2000 Actors- Nicholas Cage, Tea Leoni Synopsis- A fast-lane investment broker, offered the opportunity to see how the other half lives, wakes up to find that his sports car and girlfriend have become a mini-van and wife. John's Comments- A stock trader finds himself projected into the life of a married blue collar worker. There is a short background scene at an outdoor ice rink near the beginning of the film. A couple is shown doing a pair sitspin. IMDB Rating 6.5 Fantasia 2000 1999 Actors- None Synopsis- In this update of Disney's masterpiece film mixture of animation and music, new interpretations of great works of music are presented. It begins with an abstract battle of light and darkness set to the music of Beethoveen's Fifth Symphony. Then we see the adventures of a Humpback Whale calf and his pod set to "The Pines of Rome." Next is the humourous story of several lives in 1930's New York City, scored with "Rhapsody in Blue." Following is a musical telling of the fairy tale, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" set to the piece, "Piano Concerto No. 2." This is followed by the classic sequence from the original film, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" starring Mickey Mouse and followed by "Pomp and Circumstance" starring Donald Duck as a harried assistant to Noah on his Ark. Finally, we see the awesome tale of the life, death and renewal of a forest in a sequence featuring the composition, "The Firebird." John's Comments- (IMAX release of Disney's updated Fantasia) The players in the Rhapsody in Blue piece all become skaters in part of this piece. Incidently, the best new sequence in this film is the Elgar Pomp and Circumstance piece starring the one and only D. Duck; that one alone is worth going to see it. IMDB Rating 7.4 Field of Dreams 1935 Actors- John Mills Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- "Saki Hajnal" wrote: The movie was partly filmed at Streatham Ice Rink (London). The last part of the film takes place at a carnival in the fictional Crystal Rink Hotel. All around the ice barrier are two-person dining tables, complete with white tablecloths and lamps. The diners are entertained watching skaters in fancy dress, or being pushed round the ice themselves in upholstered, carriage-like sledges. In one sequence the ice is cleared for a short ice show. This features a male skater on stilts and two free skaters, a woman and a child. IMDB Rating Flashdance 1983 Actors- Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri Synopsis- Alex Owens is a female dynamo: steel worker by day, exotic dancer by night. Her dream is to get into a real dance company, though, and with encouragement from her boss/boyfriend, she may get her chance. John's Comments- Steve Hazen posted a reminder of this one. Two skating scenes. One where a friend of the Beals character is skating around her. The other scene is at some sort of local competition where the same friend crashes in the competition several times. (Note the non- skating scene near the start of the movie using a CHAIR, troops.) IMDB Rating 5.5 The Farmer's Daughter 1947 Actors- Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Charles Bickford Synopsis- Swedish-American farmer's daughter Katrin 'Katie' Holstrom leaves the farm to study nursing in the big, wicked city. Thanks to a chiseling acquaintance, her tuition and expense money disappears the first day, and she's forced to get a job...as a domestic for congressman Glenn Morley. Impressed by her political awareness as well as her many charms and capabilities, Glenn is soon infatuated with Katie, and she with him, but their feelings remain unspoken...until Katie speaks up at a party rally and is abruptly thrust into politics herself. John's Comments- A scene on a pond at the home of the political lead, probably a senator, since the Loretta Young character ultimately ran for and won a seat in the House; relatively daring idea for the late 40s. One of at least two movies Loretta Young has skated in. Does anyone remember her old TV series that opened with her making her signature entrance; opening a door swinging a different high roller dress around each week? IMDB Rating 7.2 For Your Eyes Only 1981 Actors- Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, Lynn Holly Johnson Synopsis- A British spy trawler is accidentally sunk off the coast of a Warsaw pact county. On board is a hi-tech encryption device called an ATAC which the British use to send launch instructions to their Polaris fleet. The British send agent James Bond to investigate but once the Soviets learn of the loss the race is on to recover the device at any cost. John's Comments- LHJ as an Olympic hopeful skater and resident jail- bait. Skating scenes shot at Cortina along with the skiing. Much of the movie, including the obligatory car chase starring that absurd little yellow Citroen C2V, supposedly in Spain, was shot on location on the Greek island of Corfu; I recognize a lot of the backgrounds. The location of Corfu is left as a exercise for the reader; no ice skating rinks there, though. The nearest rink is likely in Athens. My brother and sister-in-law were extras in the casino scene in this title and I have been in that casino myself IMDB Rating 6.6 The Freshman 1990 Actors- Matthew Broderick, Marlon Brando Synopsis- Clark Kellogg is a young man starting his first year at film school in New York City. After a small time crook steals all his belongings, Clark meets Carmine "Jimmy the Toucan" Sabatini, an "importer" bearing a startling resemblance to a certain cinematic godfather. When Sabatini makes Clark an offer he can't refuse, he finds himself caught up in a caper involving endangered species and fine dining. John's Comments- Trudi posted that Marlon Brando is seen skating in this one with a blonde woman. Trudi thought that the woman is Sandra Bezic who coached him for this flick. Marlon Brando skates in this one at a "family" skating outing, reportedly with Sandra Bezic; she is listed in the credits prominently. I've only seen parts of this one and don't recall any skating. IMDB Rating 6.5 Fresh Horses 1988 Actors- Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy Synopsis- A Cincinnati college student breaks off his engagement to his wealthy fiancée after he falls in love with a backwoods Kentucky girl he meets at a party. She claims to be 20 years old, but he learns that she's actually just 16 and already married John's Comments- In the movie FRESH HORSES made some time in the eighties, Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald are shown skating at (then) Kings Island Winterfest in Cincinnati, Ohio where the entire fountain would be frozen for the Christmas celebration. IMDB Rating 4.5 Fools Rush In 1997 Actors- Matthew Perry, Selma Heyak Synopsis- After a chance meeting in Las Vegas and a night together at his place, a young American construction supervisor, Alex Whitman, leaves Mexican photographer Isabel Fuentes pregnant. Reilly Synopsis- A baseball legend almost finished with his distinguished career at the age of thirty- seven has one last chance to prove who he is, what he is capable of, and win the heart of the woman he has loved for the past four years. John's Comments- A 40 year old MLB pitcher recalls a romance while pitching a potential perfect Series game. One winter scene has him giving some ice skates to this girlfriend. She says she will use them in Central Park. She does a small amount of shaky skating on the spot, though. IMDB Rating 6.2 Everything's On Ice(Frolics on Ice) 1939 Actors- Irene Dare, Edgar Kennedy Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- The description read: 1940 musical about a barber. There were ice skating scenes featuring Irene Dare. Haven't seen it. IMDB Rating Funny Farm 1988 Actors- Chevy Chase, Madolyn Smith-Osbourne Synopsis- When Andy and Elizabeth buy a farm in Vermont, they can't imagine the trouble that awaits them. Andy has quit his job as a sports journalist and is planning to use the peace and quiet of the country to write the Great American Novel. From the moment the movers' truck gets lost with their furniture, though, there's little peace and less quiet. From a manical mailman to a dead body buried in the garden, Andy is distracted by the town and its wacky inhabitants. His effort at a novel is mediocre, at best, and he's threatened by Elizabeth's foray into writing when she attempts a children's book. Can the Farmers survive the townsfolk and each other? John's Comments- Caught a local background pond skating scene in passing through this one. IMDB Rating 5.3 Gay Blades 1947 Actors- Allan Lane, Jean Rogers Synopsis- New York hockey player Andy Buell is approached by Hollywood talent scout Nancy Davis to play the hunk lead in "The Behemoth" but he would prefer she quit her job and become his wife. John's Comments- An old film and title; look who is in it... A talent scout looks for an athlete to star in a upcoming film. She finds a hockey star to fill the bill. Skating implied. Never heard of this one before. IMDB Rating Genius 1999 Actors- Trevor Morgan, Emmy Rossum Synopsis- Charlie, science wiz, hockey lover, and all around genius, is tired of being friendless. It's bad enough that he's in college before he's 14 helping a scientist who's in the midst of trying to defy gravity. So, in order to make his life exactly how he wants it, Charlie reinvents himself by taking on the image of a slacker/bad boy and enrolls in the local Jr. high. But juggling two lives is tough, even for a genius. John's Comments- A new Disney film where the premise is a 12 year old genius going to college. He attempts to join the college hockey team. There are a number of hockey scenes and one of a 12 year old girl the the kid meets; she's a figure skater. IMDB Rating 5.5 Gigi 1958 Actors- Leslie Caron, Maurice Chavalier Synopsis- In turn-of-the-century Paris, Gaston Lachaille is a bon vivant much like his uncle, Honore (who thanks heaven for little girls). But Gaston is becoming bored with the high life ... especially the women. He only truly enjoys the time that he spends with one of his uncle's old friends, Madame Alvarez, and her grand-daughter, the precocious and carefree Gigi. Gigi is being groomed to follow in her grandmother's footsteps as a famous courtesan. It suddenly occurs to Gaston that he could become her first protector, but the situation makes him uneasy until he discovers that he's in love with Gigi and wants to marry her. John's Comments- A scene where Gaston escorts Gigi to a Paris rink where Gaston's current girlfriend is taking a skating lesson. How could they skate in such formal and heavy clothes? And did Eva Gabor do her own skating? IMDB Rating 7.0 Goldfinger 1964 Actors- Sean Connery, Honor Blackman Synopsis- The Bank of England has discovered that someone is stockpiling vast quantities of gold and suspects international bullion dealer Auric Goldfinger of being involved. The Bank requests that British agent James Bond be sent to investigate. Bond soon uncovers an audacious plan to commit "the crime of the century" and bring economic chaos to the West. John's Comments- A little skating by a pair on a small rink at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami; background. Anybody recall a similar small rink at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco; or the Jack Tar Hotel for that matter - now known as Cathedral Hill Hotel? The rink is history, though; it's now a banquet room. IMDB Rating 7.7 The Good Son 1993 Actors- Maccauley Caulkin, Elijah Wood Synopsis- After his mother's death, a young boy, Mark, is left with his aunt and uncle while his father makes an important trip. Cousin Henry is at first great fun, but isn't your average boy next door. Mark believes Henry is evil, but no one else can see this. John's Comments- Eda replied that a previous post of hers did not refer to HOME ALONE, but to this movie. She said that she happily watched and greatly enjoyed was "The Good Son." It was about an adorable little boy who is actually EVIL INCARNATE. Don't know about any skating here. (updated info)-Lorimar263 wrote: There is a skating scene where the characters played by MC and his sister are holding hands skating round and round very fast. He lets go of her hand and she flies down the pond into the thin ice, falls through and nearly drowns. IMDB Rating 5.6 Gorky Park 1983 Actors- William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy Synopsis- An investigator on the Moscow police force relentlessly pursues the solution to a triple homicide which occurred in Moscow's Gorky Park. He finds that no one really wants him to solve the crime because it is just the tip of a complex conspiracy which involves the highest levels of the Moscow city government. John's Comments- This movie opens at a skating rink in a Moscow park with a closeup of a pair of ladies' figure skates. The scene is then zoomed out to show a lot of the skaters. IMDB Rating 6.5 Gremlins 1984 Actors- Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hyot Axton Synopsis- A boy inadvertantly breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town John's Comments- The scene of the the gremlins partying at a bar has has several views of an ongoing hockey game on the bar's TV set. Yeah, a little lame, but within the original list premise - ANY ice skating. Not quite as lame as the GRUMPY OLD MEN entry, though. IMDB Rating 6.8 Grumpy Old Men 1993 Actors- Jack Lemmon, Walter Mathau, Ann Margaret Synopsis- John and Max are elderly men living next door to each other. They're continuously arguing and insulting each other, and have been this way for over 50 years. One day, Ariel, moves into the street. Both men are attracted to her, and their rivalry steps up a gear. John's Comments- his one is a little lame for skating content. There is a hockey game on a very snowy TV set in the ice- fishing shanty of Walter Matthau's character. IMDB Rating 6.6 Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates Unknow year Actors- TBA Synopsis- Hans Brinker wants to be an artist, but after his father is badly hurt Hans has to work odd jobs to help his family. When his father gets worse, Hans enters a big skating race in hopes of winning the prize and helping his family. John's Comments- A Disney version of the Dutch classic shown very recently on the Disney channel. This is not the one Tab Hunter (a onetime competitor) did. There are a number of versions of this story floating around. IMDB Rating Happy Gilmore 1996 Actors- Adam Sandler Synopsis- A Hocky player wanna-be finds out that he has the most powerful golf drive in history. He joins the PGA tour to make some money to save grandma's house. The downside is that his hocky player mentality doesn't really go on the PGA tour. Especially with the favorite to win the championship. John's Comments- A failed hockey player with a hairy slapshot becomes a golf pro. Some hockey scenes shown. One scene of the primary character on a rink with a lady in figure skates. Only saw parts of this one; looked like a loser. IMDB Rating 6.7 Happy Landing 1938 Actors- Sonja Henie, Don Ameche Synopsis- Bandleader (Romero and manager (Ameche) discover skater (Henie) in Norway. They become rivals as she returns with them to America. John's Comments- Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. IMDB Rating 6.0 Heat 1994 Actors- Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer Synopsis- A Los Angeles crime saga, "Heat" focuses on the lives of two men on opposite sides of the law - one a detective; the other a thief. John's Comments- One scene has the thief that Robert DeNiro is playing wasting someone who is watching a televised hockey game. IMDB Rating 7.8 H-E Double Hockey Sticks 1999 Actors- Will Friedle, Matthew Lawrence, Rhea Perlman, Tyler Labine Synopsis- Griffelkin, a young devil-in-training is sent to the surface of Earth to steal the soul of Dave, a hot shot pro-hockey player aspiring to be the youngest man to win the Stanley Cup. John's Comments- Satan, played by Perlman - who else?, sends an apprentice to steal the soul of a promising hockey player. Lots of hockey. Satan loses, as is common, in these soul-stealing yarns. IMDB Rating 5.4 Hello London 1958 Actors- Sonja Henie Synopsis- A travelogue type movie-Follows Henie around as she tours with various ice shows John's Comments- Ran across a cast list for this title; Sonja Henie appears in this list; a list of a buch of people playing themselves. No description for this title was available. (Added info) this movie had limited release in England and Norway IMDB Rating High Time 1960 Actors- Bing Crosby, Fabian, Tuesday Weld Synopsis- Widower and hamburger restaurateur Howard Harvey decides to go to college at 51 years of age. Resisting the easy path, he insists on not receiving preferential treatment, and lives in a dorm like the other students despite the disapproval of his grown son and daughter. As the years pass, and he gets involved in study sessions, fraternity initiations, and sporting events, he begins falling in love with Professor Gautier, the French teacher, but doesn't consider re-marrying appropriate. John's Comments- Two scenes of college students skating on a pond; an obvious studio tank. All of the principals actually do skate, including Crosby and Fabian - none very well; Fabian was possibly the best of the bunch. IMDB Rating 5.2 Hit the Ice 1943 Actors- Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Ginny Sims Synopsis- Two newspaper photographers get mixed up with gangsters at a ski resort. John's Comments- A lame bank robbery plot in which the comic pair is blamed. The real bank robbers, along with Abbott and Costello and a nurse and doctor from the hospital across the street from the target bank travel to Sun Valley, mostly to hide out. So help me, that's the base plot. There is one long skating scene where you see four of the principals skate. The nurse and doctor (probably their skating stand-ins) do opposing single lutz jumps similar to the CW lutz that Sonja Henie did. Lou Costello appears to have done some of his own comic skating in this scene such as it was. One funny sequence has him being shoved over by a little girl about four or five. She later helps him stand up and then blows on him causing him to crash again. Bud Abbott does a little shaky skating here also. The rink used does not look anything like the one at Sun Valley, though; granted, this is a 1943 production. IMDB Rating 5.9 Hockey Night 1984 Actors- Rick Moranis, Megan Fellows Synopsis- When a young girl wants to join her high school's hockey team as goalie, she meets with resistence, but also gets support, especially from the star forward of the team. IMDB Rating 5.5 Home Alone 1990 Actors- Macauley Caulkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern Synopsis- In this film, Macaulay Culkin is an eight years old boy that is left at home by his parents, when they leave with the rest of the family for Christmas holidays to Paris. At first he seems to enjoy living alone, but after a while he understands that things aren't so easy. Especially when two robbers deside to break in a particular house. HIS house! Is he able to defend his home? John's Comments- A couple of netters (charisma@jadeinc.com and Eda - tseinyev@geocities.com) posted that there is a scene in which the kid slides across a pond on which people are skating. Don't recall it and this is one title I don't have in the library. IMDB Rating 6.3 Home Alone 2: Lost in New York Actors- Macauley Caulkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern Synopsis- The McAllister family go on a holiday to Florida. Kevin McAllister gets separated from his family, and manages to get himself onto a plane to New York instead. There, he checks into the best hotel with his father's credit card, and sets out to enjoy himself. Unfortunately, the burgulars he had foiled before were in New York after being released from jail, and had plans to rob the biggest toyshop in New York on Christmas Eve. Kevin discovers their plan, and sets out to foil their plots again, while the burgulars set out to finish off what they had not done before - the killing of the brat Kevin. John's Comments- Ran across this one again on the Fox Family Channel. There was some skating in this one at the Wollman Rink; that odd shaped outdoor rink in Central Park. Our two villains were planning their next caper while skating at this rink. Missed this scene the first time I saw this title; must not have been paying much attention. A few decent skaters appeared briefly in the background. IMDB Rating 4.8 Honeysuckle Rose 1980 Actors- Willie Nelson, Amy Irving, Dyan Cannon Synopsis- Buck Bonham(Willie Nelson) and Garland Ramsey(Slim Pickens) are two country stars that have been on the road for probably too many years. Garland wants to retire and Buck is too stubborn to. There needs to be a temporary replacement for Garland and it is suggested that Garland's daughter Lily(Amy Irving)go out with Buck and the band for a few weeks John's Comments- Tracy McCaffrey wrote: There's a scene where two principals (Irving, Nelson) are sharing an ice cream cone and watching skaters at a mall rink - anyone know which mall?. The ice cream scoops accidentally drop onto the ice, so they hastily leave. Shots of some skaters in group and private lessons. By JL - Did anyone pick up on the harness being used by one skater and her coach for a waltz jump? Anyone know the rink? I think the location was supposed to be in Texas; didn'tlook like the Galleria, though; it's the only rink name I know of in Texas. IMDB Rating 5.8 I See Ice 1938 Actors- George Formby, Kay Walsh, Betty Stockfeld, Cyril Ritchard Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- A property man for an ice ballet troupe develops a new camera. Skating is implied. IMDB Rating 7.3 Ice Angel 2000 Actors- Nicolle Thom, Tara Lipinski, Nancy Kerrigan Synopsis- A popular hocky player dies and is reborn as a woman and becomes a figure skater. John's Comments- A Family Channel, made-for-TV movie where an olympics bound hockey player croaks and is reincarnated as a teenage girl that was in a coma; girl resumes figure skating, goes to the olympics. A blatant rip-off of the 1978 HEAVEN CAN WAIT which was a re-make of a 40s film about a reincarnated boxer, HERE COMES MR. JORDAN. The basic idea was passable but the execution was a bit of a stinkeroo. Couldn't they have hired a consultant that knew something about how the sport works? The four prominent skaters could have even filled the producers in on some details. All four have skated in the Olympics and three of them have five olympic medals and seven Worlds medals and a bunch of US and Canadian nationals medals between them. IMDB Rating 5.2 Ice Capades 1941 Actors- James Ellison, Dorothy Lewis, Jerry Colonna Synopsis- A case of mistaken identity as a man who shoots a newsreel shot of the wrong girl leads to dis-array. John's Comments- A 1941 movie; probably similar to the Henie movies. Entry from the Banner Blue movie archive program. Haven't seen it. Quick, what are some other movies that Alan Mowbray appears in? IMDB Rating Ice Castles 1978 Actors- bby Benson, Lynn-Holly Johnson Synopsis- A young girl is on top of the world until a tragic accident dashes her hopes and dreams of becoming a world-class figure skater. Only with the help of those who love her can she prove to the world -- and herself -- that she still has the potential to realize her dreams. John's Comments- One of the few "real" figure skating movies available; you've all probably seen this one too. If you haven't read the novelization, Lexie was written as doing several triple axels which, of course, LHJ could not begin to do. LHJ did do several double axels in this title though. IMDB Rating 5.4 Ice Follies of 1939 1939 Actors- Joan Crawford, James Stewart Synopsis- Mary and Larry are are a modestly successful skating team. Shortly after their marriage, Marry gets a picture contract, while Larry is sitting at home, out of work. To prove that he can accomplish things on his own, he leaves Hollywood and convinces a former partner to put on an ice revue in Canada. The show is a huge success, but it makes it impossible for him to be with his wife, but the studio boss has a wonderful idea. John's Comments- TCAXEL replied: What about that all time classic, "The ice follies of 1939" starring Joan Crawford, James Stewart and I believe Lew Ayres. I believe it was one of the stinkers that practically ended Crawford's MGM career. And Jimmy Stewart was part of a skating horse! By JL - This one starts out in B & W and ends in color. Natalie Kalmus was the Technicolor director for the color portion; hers was a common name in color movies of the 30s and 40s. Crawford and Stewart both appear to do a small amount of skating themselves. IMDB Rating 4.6 Ice Pawn 1989 Actors- Paul Cross, Dan Haggerty, Robert Budaska, Chris Thomas Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- A talented skater believes his only obstacle to a gold medal is his Russian rival, Misha. IMDB Rating 1.5 Ice Princess 1995 Actors- Katarina Witt, Christopher Barker, Toller Cranston, Roz Sumners Synopsis- This is another variation of the Cinderella story: the bright and beautiful Ella lives in the household of a lord since her mother died. When the day nears the prince is forced by law to find a wife, a celebration on a frozen lake is arranged. Ella manages to skate on the lake for him too, hiding her identity. The prince falls in love with her, so he tries to find her. His chancellor attempts to hinder them, since he knows about Ella's critical thoughts. John's Comments- Reportedly a Cinderella spin-off. IMDB Rating 6.2 The Ice Rink(Patinoire, La) 1998 Actors- Tom Novembre, Delores Chaplin Synopsis- A film director tries to cope with his frantic producer, too-amorous actors, and a disaster-prone crew as he rushes to get his deeply symbolic hockey movie "Dolores" done in time for the Venice Film Festival. John's Comments- A foreign movie that is a "movie-within-a-movie" genre. A director is trying to make a sports movie at a French ice rink. IMDB Rating 6.7 Iceland 1942 Actors- Sonja Henie, John Payne Synopsis- Marine, James Murfin, is unaware of Icelandic customs. IMDB Rating 6.4 Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport 2000 Actors- Lorraine Allard and other Halocaust survivors Synopsis- The story of the child refugees who were transported to Britain to escape the Nazi Holocaust John's Comments- Saw a promo about a story of 10000 jews who left Germany for the UK There was some B&W footage of skaters in Germany in the 30s. IMDB Rating 7.9 It's a Pleasure 1945 Actors- Sonja Henie, Michael O'Shea Synopsis- Don Martin in a star hockey player with the Wildcats until he is barred from Hockey for hitting a referee. But Gale is also interested in Don and when he has a chance to leave and join Jack's premiere show, she takes him drinking. As an alcoholic, he is in no shape to skate for Jack so Buzz has Chris do a routine. Her act is great and Jack wants her, without Don, for his ice skating show. Don leaves her so that she will go to the show and be a star. John's Comments- Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. motty@ix.netcom.com emailed about this one; said his father was in it. Henie's only movie in color. Surprising that none of the B&W ones have been colorized; hear that, Ted? I have no objection to colorizing unless a movie is shot in B&W for effect. IMDB Rating 6.3 Jack Frost 1998 Actors- Michael Keaton, Kelly Preston Synopsis- Jack Frost is a singer who's on the road most of the time so he can't spend a lot of time with his son Charlie, although they love each other very much. When Jack dies in a car accident, Charlie becomes a very sad young man, until... Jack returns as a snowman! Now they can do all the things they've missed when Jack was human, but what will people think when they see Charlie talking to a snowman and what will happen when the weather gets warmer? John's Comments- A 12-year old's father re-incarnated as a snowman. Only saw part of this one; a number of hockey scenes. Credits implied some other ice skating also. IMDB Rating 4.5 January Man 1989 Actors- Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio Synopsis- Nick and Frank Starkey were both policemen. A scandal forced Nick to leave the force, now a serial killer has driven the police to take him back... John's Comments- Some public skating in a NYC park. The Mastranonio and Kline characters appear to do their own skating. IMDB Rating 5.2 Lady, Let's Dance 1944 Actors- Belita, James Ellison, Walter Catlett Synopsis- War refugee Belita, who just happens to be adept at every sort of dancing you can name, is a waitress who is selected by our leading man to turn into a dancer when his show's prima donna walks out. Well, he makes her a star but they are separated through a misunderstanding when a letter gone astray makes him think she has forgotten him. He enlists and she finds him in the end in a wheelchair as they reconcile. Along the way we see her do fancy ballroom specialty dancing, ballet and finally ice dancing. . The film also features comedy ice skating team, Frick and Frack. John's Comments- A skater is hired as a replacement for a dance team; becomes a national star. Oscar nominated score. Haven't seen it. IMDB Rating Lake Placid Serenade 1944 Actors- Vera Ralston, Robert Livingston Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- Reportedly a blatant rip-off of SUN VALLEY SERENADE. The title certainly is. The presence of Vera Ralston and Belita imply some skating. Possibly also known as WINTER SERENADE. But Roy Rogers, skating? Haven't seen this one, though. IMDB Rating 5.0 The Last of the Blonde Bombshells 2000 Actors- Judi Dench, Ian Holm, Leslie Caron, Olympia Dukakais Synopsis- A woman tries to reunite the swing band she played with during WWII. John's Comments- There is a short scene at an outdoor ice skating rink, presumably in London (Annabel?), at which Judi Dench's character is playing a sax. IMDB Rating 7.2 Les Boys 1997 Actors- Marc Messier, Remy Girard Synopsis- Ever wanted to know what guys say when they get together? This light- hearted comedy explores the male world through an amateur hockey team. Every male stereotype is analyzed, comically of course. John's Comments- Just barely recall pieces of this one. A bunch of kids learning to play hockey, as I recall. IMDB Rating 6.5 Let it Snow(Snow Days) 2001 Actors- Kipp Marcus. Bernadette Peters, Alice Dylan, Larry Pine Synopsis- Two young lovers meet on a series of snowy days in high school John's Comments- Iffy teen romance. This is a bit of ice skating in one scene. Haven't seen much of it. Together with Roger Murtaugh, his partner, the three attempt to expose a crooked formed policeman and his huge arms racket. John's Comments- There is a long scene at an LA Kings hockey game. Three of the principals run out on the ice during the game chasing someone. Mel Gibson caught a few body checks from some King players and Joe Pesci caught a bullet. All three knew how to deal with walking and running on ice or were taught how to do so. IMDB Rating 6.3 Life After Hockey 1989 Actors- Ken Brown Synopsis- An amateur hockey player talks about his life, his love affair with hockey and his supposed one time shot in the big time. John's Comments- Ran across a post about this one via another thread. A Canadian movie made in the late 80s/early 90s about a guy reminiscing and fantasizing on his relationship with the game of hockey. Kurt Browning is in it playing "Richard" who came to the public skating sessions and dazzled everyone with his "fancy skating" IMDB Rating The Lineup 1958 Actors- Eli Wallach, Robert Keith, Warner Anderson Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- This title is a movie version of the late 50s TV cop series. The movie had a scene that was shot at the old Sutro's rink in San Francisco. A number of people I know were skating extras for a nighttime shoot. The night shoot didn't make it past the editor but a fairly long scene that did make the final cut was shot in the daytime with a lot of shots of the ice rink in the backround. I did a lot of skating at that rink until it closeed in 1966. A lot of fairly good footage of the interior of the Sutro's building, museums, the entrance stairs from the street and the rink; it gives you a good feel for the size of the place. If you ever see this title (possibly on the Encore Mystery channel), please note that the rink was about 20-30 feet above the level of the beach the building was next to. The foundations of the Sutro Baths buildings can still be seen below and to the right of the Cliff House on Pt. Lobos Blvd. in San Francisco. The obligatory car chase scene jumped all over the city as most such scenes will do in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles (those always end up in the concrete lined L.A. river, right?), Chicago, New York, London, Paris, etc. Saw a movie shot in London that had someone driving over Westminster Bridge toward Parliament; the next scene had him going around the loop in front of Buckingham palace. A car chase in London traffic would seem to be something of an oxymoron, though. IMDB Rating 7.1 Little Nicky 2000 Actors- Adam Sandler, Patricia Arquette, Harvey Keitel Synopsis- Cassius and Adrain leave Hell, thereby freezing the wall of fire that lets the damned souls into Hell. Since no souls can come in now, Satan starts to die. It's up to Little Nicky to go and get his brothers, putting them into a flask and bringing them back to Hell at the exact same time to save Satan from decomposition John's Comments- Typical Adam Sandler nonsense. This time, he's one of Satan's sons mixed up in a hostile take-over of Hell. At the end, there is a glimpse of the Wollman rink in Central Park. IMDB Rating 4.9 Little Women 1994 Actors- Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon Synopsis- With their father away fighting in the Civil War, Joe, Meg, Beth and Amy grow up with their mother in somewhat reduced circumstances. They are a close family who inevitably have their squabbles and tragedies. But the bond holds even when, later, men friends start to become a part of the household. John's Comments- Haven't seen this one yet. Joe Jaucian posted that there is a pond skating scene in it. updated info)-AlysFaire@aol.com wrote: Pond scene has Ryder's Jo and Christian Bale's Laurie racing on skates over the pond. Kirsten Dunst's Amy, Jo's little sister, has tagged along and falls through the ice. She's heroically rescued by Laurie and Jo. IMDB Rating 7.1 The Long Kiss Goodnight 1996 Actors- Geena Davis, Samuel L Jackson Synopsis- Samantha Caine, suburban homemaker, is the ideal mom to her 8 year old daughter Caitlin. She lives in an ideal New England small town, has a job teaching school and makes the best Rice Krispie treats in town. But when she receives a bump on her head, she begins to remember small parts of her previous life as a lethal, top-secret agent. Her old chums in the Chapter are now out to kill her so she enlists the help of a cheap detective named Mitch. As Samantha remembers more and more of her previous life, she becomes deadlier and more resourceful. Both Mitch and Charly proceed to do the killing thing, the bleeding thing and the shooting thing. John's Comments- Two skating scenes. One in which Geena Davis' character is challenging her daughter to skate and a second where Davis' character crosses a frozen lake to shoot up a car. Geena Davis appears to have done some and possibly all of her character's skating; she is supposed to be a good all-around athlete. IMDB Rating 6.5 Look Who's Talking Now 1993 Actors- John Travolta, Kirstie Allie Synopsis- In this, the third film, it's the pets who do the talking. The Ubriacco's find themselves the owners of two dogs, Rocks, a street wise cross breed, and Daphne, a spoilled pedegree poodle. James has a new job, pilot to the sexy and lonely Samantha. Jennifer and her dad (Phil Cavilleri) do what they can to bring father and son back together, but the two prefer to remain at war with one another. Years go by, and the young couple attempt to have children, only to discover that she is malfunctioning. John's Comments- Joe and Mary Schirmer posted about the O'Neal character playing hockey. I vaguely remember that. And no, I don't see Weird Al Goreovic and Tipper as the models for the principals in this pup. IMDB Rating 6.0 Margie 1946 Actors- Jeanne Crain, Glenn Langan, Lynn Bari, Alan Young Synopsis- Margie and her daughter reminisce about Margie's girlhood in the roaring twenties. In flashback, Margie, a smarter, less popular girl at Central High, meets handsome new French teacher Ralph Fontayne; circumstances keep throwing them together and Margie, in company with every other girl in school, develops a crush on him. Then Margie's date for the prom gets sick, and what happens next surprises everyone. John's Comments- Trudi Marrapodi wrote: One movie you might want to add is MARGIE. I can't remember who starred in it (possibly June Allyson?) I don't recall seeing it but I have heard of the title before. Possibly the old MY LITTLE MARGIE TV show was a spin-off? [updated] June Allyson does not appear to be in this movie. What skating was in it? IMDB Rating 6.6 Me & Isaac Newton 1999 Actors- Paul Allen and other scientists Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- The skating connection is actually the source of the film's title. Quote from the review: When the twinkling-eyed theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, shown gliding on an ice rink, remarks that here "it's just me and Isaac Newton," you practically want to hug him. By JL - Saw a short clip of this title recently; Michio Kaku seems to know what he is doing on skates. IMDB Rating 7.1 The Mighty Ducks 1992 Actors- Emilio Estevez Synopsis- Gordon Bombay, a hotshot lawyer, is haunted by memories of his childhood, when, as the star player in his champion hockey team, he lost the winning goal in a shootout, thereby losing the game, and the approval of his coach. When the court orders him to coach a peewee hockey team, the worst in the league, Gordon is at first very reluctant. However, he eventually gains the respect of the kids and teaches them how to win, gaining a sponsor on the way and giving the team the name of The Ducks. In the finals, they face Gordon's old team, coached by Gordon's old coach, giving Gordon a chance to face old ghosts John's Comments- have only seen bits and pieces of this one. There was a figure skater on this team wearing figure skates; did a spin in a game, as I recall. IMDB Rating 5.7 Miracle on Ice 1981 Actors- Karl Malden, Andrew Stevens, Steve Guttenberg Synopsis- The fact-based story of how the U.S. Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets at the 1980 Lake Placid, N.Y John's Comments- Made for TV movie about the 1980 U.S. hockey team at Lake Placid. IMDB Rating 6.2 Moms on Strike 2002 Actors- Faith Ford, Tim Matheson, Florence Henderson Synopsis- She was an overworked mom trying to get her family's attention. She didn't know she would become a national sensation. John's Comments- An ABC Family channel produced movie. A working mother goes on strike against her family. One of her sons is a hockey player. Hockey skating appears a couple of times. IMDB Rating 5.0 Money Train 1995 Actors- Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lopez Synopsis- Two foster brothers (Snipes and Harrelson) can't convince anyone that they're just that; But that's old hat to them. Seeing it all the time, they decide that they have to rob it; The money train that collects and transports the station's fare cash. John's Comments- Several overhead shots of the Rockefeller Center rink and some odd shaped rink, possibly in Central Park. These scenes were at the start of the movie. IMDB Rating 5.1 Murder in the Music Hall 1946 Actors- Vera Ralston, William Marshall, Helen Walker Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- A song and dance show includes some ice skating sequences; a lame murder mystery also. Aka MIDNIGHT MELODY. IMDB Rating 5.1 MVP: Most Valuable Primate 2000 Actors- Russell Ferrier, Lomax Study, Kevin Zegers Synopsis- Jack skates a little faster... Shoots a little harder... John's Comments- AlysFaire wrote: Small Alaska town is chosen as site of a televised game with their local team against the NY Rangers. The town _is_ hockey, with the highlight being the weekly Saturday game the team plays (against itself) to the delight of the locals. Lots of skating in this one (both hockey and I believe some locals skating on the pond). Academy Award nominee (for THE INSIDER) Crowe, learned to skate for the film (it's mostly an ensemble piece, but he's pretty much the main character). I remember reading that some of the NY Rangers appeared as themselves, but I couldn't tell you who. (By JL - This movie also featured a very old Zamboni; one of those that used a conveyer belt to transfer the ice removed into the snow bin. Usta drive one of those for 06:00 patch MANY years ago while I was\ in college. IMDB Rating 6.4 Damien, Omen II Actors- William Holden, Lee Grant, Jonathan Scott-Taylor Synopsis- The young Antichrist learns of his destiny while dark forces seek to eliminate all those who suspect the child's true identity. John's Comments- A bunch of kids and adults playing hockey on a rural lake. One falls through some thin ice and drowns, probably by design. IMDB Rating 5.7 Once Around 1991 Actors- Richard Dreyfuss, Lynn-Holly Johnson Synopsis- Renata Bella feels like a failure at life and career. But when Renata attends a seminar on selling real estate, she finally finds True Love. Sam Sharpe, while a top-notch, successful salesman, is much older than Renata. She is swept away by his excessively flamboyant style and irrepressible nature. The very traits she finds romantic, however, lead to repeated conflict with her family, especially her beloved father Joe, leaving Renata trapped in the middle. John's Comments- Just ran across an old email from easterslice that noted this movie. Hunter's character skates around a frozen lake Dreyfus' character watches holding an infant. The first, an all-hands family outing and the second with just Hunter and Dreyfus with him holding an infant; he croaks (sorry, Sandra) in this scene. All of the principals appear to do their own skating, none very well. IMDB Rating 6.4 Onegin 1999 Actors- Ralph Fiennes, Toby Stephans, Liv Tyler Synopsis- In the opulent St. Petersburg of the Empire period, Eugene Onegin is a jaded but dashing aristocrat - a man often lacking in empathy, who suffers from restlessness, melancholy and, finally, regret. A passionate and virtuous girl, she soon falls hopelessly under the spell of the aloof newcomer and professes her love for him. His refusal of her (in addition to his other amorous intrigues) sets in motion a series of events which culminate in tragedy and thwarted love. John's Comments- Don't know anything about this one other that it is supposed to contain some skating scenes. I saw pieces of this one, though, skating in 18th century Russia? IMDB Rating 6.5 On Her Majesty's Secret Service 1969 Actors- George Lazenby, Diane Rigg, Telly Savalas Synopsis- Whilst on leave, British agent James Bond prevents a young woman, Tracy Draco, from committing suicide. At first Bond agrees to the deal purely to fulfil his objective to kill Blofeld but later he grows to love Tracy but when the British learn that Blofeld plans to destroy mankind with a deadly virus, 007 is torn between his loyalty to his county and his intent to marry Tracy. John's Comments- Diana Rigg's character (Contessa Traci di Vicenzo) skating at a New Year festival in Switzerland as Bond skis off of the Piz Gloria to escape Blofeld. Hard to tell if Rigg was actually the skater. IMDB Rating 6.7 On Thin Ice 1961 Actors- Ina Bauer, Toni Sailer Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- Found a listing on ENCORE(TRUE sub-channel) for this 1961 movie. John's Comments- Haven't seen the seen the whole thing so I haven't a clue what it's about; ran across a Toronto hockey rink scene. IMDB Rating 5.5 Orlando 1992 Actors- Tilda Swinton, Quentin Crisp Synopsis- Based upon Virginia Woolf's novel; a comely, immortal youth experiences life from the point of view of both sexes as s/he moves through four centuries of social change. John's Comments- Reported by a netter from Germany. Don't know anything about this one. From a post about it: Yes! There is skating in the movie, when Orlando is skating with the young Russian lady. A very visually satisfying scene, with the scenery and rich costumes. The main character exists through about 450 years, once changing gender, M to F, about halfway through the story and without having aged. One segment labeled 1610 took place in a icy climate. A lot of people were skating around on primitive skates which resembled Jackson Haines blades. Don't know how historically accurate this was; don't know how far back general usage of metal skate blades goes. Watched only parts of this one. Tilda Swinton was not very convincing as a young man. More convincing as a woman; surprise, surprise. IMDB Rating 6.6 Paperback Hero 1973 Actors- Keir Dullea, Elizabeth Ashley Synopsis- A hockey player in a small town begins to lose his grip on reality, and starts to believe that he is a gunslinger in the Old West. Mason posted a note about this 40s movie. A painter and a young girl meet skating in Central Park. Late 1800s period piece. I'll have to look for it on AMC. An artist meets a young teen in Central Park and and watches her grow into a woman throughout the movie. One scene has the principals skating in Central Park. This movie was in black & white except for the final shot. The artist's collected works are being shown and the "Portrait of Jenny" appears in color; sort of a lame forerunner of the PLEASANTVILLE production? IMDB Rating The Preacher's Wife 1996 Actors- Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B Vance, Gergory Hines Synopsis- Good natured Reverend Henry Biggs finds that his marriage to choir mistress Julia is flagging, due to his constant absence caring for the deprived neighbourhood they live in. On top of all this, his church is coming under threat from property developer Joe Hamilton. In desperation, Rev. Biggs prays to God for help - and help arrives in the form of an angel named Dudley. However, Dudley's arrival seems to cause even more trouble... John's Comments- A remake of THE BISHOP'S WIFE. It has been reported here that Houston and Washington do all of their own skating; can't say for sure since there are both close-ups and long shots. It looked to me like they did some of the skating. Dutch then goes to Chandler and tells her that he suspects that they were having an affair. He tells her that he wants to know the truth; she tells him that she doesn't but she later joins him and they grow close. John's Comments- There was a short background scene at an outdoor ice rink near the end of the movie. Is there some sort of tank set up near one of the DC buildings on the Mall for the winter? The building in the background has that DC 30s WPA look. IMDB Rating 4.8 Real Genius 1985 Actors- Val Kilmer Synopsis- Mitch is one of the youngest students ever accepted to a university known for its programs for geniuses. Together with their hyper-kinetic friends, they employ their intellects in the pursuit of bigger blasts, practical jokes, and a deeper understanding of what real genius is. When their final, functional laser is stolen by their teacher for a military weapon, they decide to get even. John's Comments- A scene in which a college "genius" dorm has people ice skating in the hallways on genius-created ice that sublimed like CO2 rather than melting. The inventor said he hoped that the sublimating stuff was not going to explode. IMDB Rating 6.7 Ice Capades Review 1942 Actors- Ellen Drew, Richard Denning, Jerry Colona Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- New England farm girl tries to turn a local ice show into a commercial success. Working in a meat factory in Philadelphia for a pittance, he also earns extra cash as a debt collector. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers want to set up an exhibition match between Creed and a struggling boxer, touting the fight as a chance for a "nobody" to become a "somebody". The match is supposed to be easily won by Creed, but someone forgot to tell Rocky, who sees this as his only shot at the big time. John's Comments- Teresa (Traz66) posted that Rocky took his future wife ice skating on an early date. Never did see this one until I recently ran across the skating scene; only Talia Shire was wearing skates, Sly was just walking around on the ice with her. Whatsamata, Sly, too chicken to learn to skate? Skating might upstage the ole macho image? IMDB Rating 7.7 Ronin 1998 Actors- Robert DeNiro Synopsis- Ronin is the Japanese word used for Samurai without a master. In this case, the Ronin are outcast specialists of every kind, whose services are available to everyone - for money. After the mission has been completed successfully, the suitcase immediately gets switched by a member of the team who seems to work into his own pocket. The complex net of everyone tricking everyone begins to surface slowly, and deadly... John's Comments- Kat plays a Russian figure skater in this one; very little dialogue. Obviously does all of her own skating. She gets blown away on the ice, however. IMDB Rating 7.0 Ronnie and Julie 1996 Actors- Joshua Jackson, Margot Finley Synopsis- Capulet becomes Cappell, and Montague becomes Monroe in yet another modernized adaptation of Shakespeare's classic "Romeo and Juliet." This time, the adult family members are feuding by way of a mayoral election, while Ronnie and Julie are the ice-skating lovers (he in hockey, and she as a figure skater.) . John's Comments- A Showtime produced film that I just rolled to tape recently. The principals are both skaters; the girl, a figure skater and the guy, a hockey player; what else?. A fair amount of hockey scenes and a number of figure skating scenes. The feathered suit worn by the girl in the last skating scene beats out any of Oksana Baiul's or Slutskaya's feathered outfits. IMDB Rating 5.7 The Running Man 1987 Actors- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso Synopsis- A parody within an action thriller. Arnold Schwartzenegger plays an innocent man who is sentenced to the Running Man game show, a futuristic audience participation capital punishment television show. While running from champions with Chain saws and sharpened hocky sticks, the host (Richard Dawson) is busy with calls to the network about ratings. John's Comments- If you have seen the movie, one of the "stalkers" is a hockey skater using a metal hockey stick against the "runners". He was taken out by having barbed wire wrapped around his neck; a good way to take care of those ersatz hockey players infecting rinks these days, maybe? IMDB Rating 6.2 Second Fiddle 1939 Actors- Sonja Henie, Tyrone Power, Rudy Vallee Synopsis- Studio publicist (Power) discovers Minnesota skating teacher (Henie) and takes her to Hollywood. IMDB Rating 5.3 Serendipity 2001 Actors- John Cusak, Kate Beckinsale Synopsis- A couple reunite years after the night they first met, fell in love, and separated, convinced that one day they'd end up together. John's Comments- Does this one really qualify as "ice skating" by the list premise? A website article on this one said that the production used one of the plastic "ice" products over the concrete surface of the Central Park Wollman rink for the two skating scenes in this movie. The NY Post article was at: http://www.nypostonline.com/entertainment/8310.htm Haven't seen it yet. Through a series of circumstances (including POW camp), he and fellow climber Peter Aufschnaiter become the only two foreigners in the Tibetan Holy City of Lhasa. There, Heinrich's life changes forever as he becomes a close confidant to the Dalai Lama. John's Comments- LADYC712" wrote: Ever see this film? It was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, released in 1997. In it, a Tibetan character initially thinks that an ice skate is something you strap onto your foot to slice up meat. Brad Pitt and David Thewlis skate on a pond with some locals; Pitt does a little knee slide and teaches some monks to skate after Thewlis takes off with the woman they're both after. IMDB Rating South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut 1999 Actors- Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Mary Kay Bergman, Isaac Hayes Synopsis- Southpark is a quiet and peaceful place until the latest Terrance and Philip movie comes out. Once all the kids see it, all hell breaks loose, as the parents try to find a way to stop their kids from saying all the naughty words coming out of their mouths. The parents blame Terrance and Philip, place them under Citizen's Arrest, and declare war on their home country, Canada. It is up to the kids to save the world from Satan and keep Terrance and Philip from being executed John's Comments- I'm a little reluctant to list this trashy cartoon but it does contain some ice skating. Along the way, Lesley Gore shows up on the bus to sing "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows", and James Brown and the Fabulous Flames appear at the lodge to sing "I Feel Good". John's Comments- A spin-off of the Beach Party movies; staged at Sun Valley. One scene of three or four minutes has what is supposed to be the outdoor rink at Sun Valley in the background but the sunshade appears to be missing; possibly shot on location closer to LA? The railing looks like the one at Sun Valley, though. IMDB Rating 4.3 Slap Shot 1977 Actors- Paul Newman, Michael Ontkean, Jennifer Warren Synopsis- The player-coach of a nowhere small town hockey team must deal with an intractable owner, hostile crowds and on-ice thuggery in this warm-hearted and only slightly farcical look at ice hockey. IMDB Rating 4.4 The Snow Queen Actors- Sandra Bezic, Toller Cranston, John Curry, Dorothy Hamill, Janet Lynn, Jojo Starbuck Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- A Han Christian Andersen tale on the ice set to music. Obsiously not too new; never heard of this one. IMDB Rating Snow White and the Three Stooges 1961 Actors- Larry Fine, Joe DePita, Moe Howard, Carol Heiss Synopsis- TBA John's Comments- The Henie wanna-be movie. Carol Heiss has to cringe every time this one is mentioned although it now could be sort of a cult classic seeing as how the Stooges are in it and in color, yet; one of only two Stooge titles I know of in color. Carol Heiss is reported to have done axels in both directions in this one but I have never found them. Were the Stooges actually on skates in the final scene? Stranger things can happen; few people are aware that Laurel and Hardy both spoke fluent Spanish and and made some of their typical films in Spanish. On finding Allen, they fall in love, but she has a secret, which will no longer be a secret if she gets her legs wet.. John's Comments- The Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks characters are skating at what appears to be some rink in New York City; not Rockefeller Center, however. It looked to me like they did all of their skating; no stand-ins. Both Kevin Anderson and Joe Jaucian posted reminders about SPLASH. IMDB Rating 6.3 Stardom 2000 Actors- Jessica Pare, Victoria Show, Jessica Mackenzie Synopsis- A sports photographer in rural Canada sends a picture of a high school athlete, Tina Menzhal, to a Montr‚al fashion agency. The conflict between them is deepend by the sudden diagnose of cancer, which might may be deadly for Jackie. They all have to learn a little in order to grow together. When soloist Vivian Dawn quits, Karen stages an ice show as a substitute. John's Comments- Typical Sonja Henie movie; skating featuring Henie; minimal plot. Probably the best known of her 11 movies. Henie also skis in this one; known to be a good all-around athlete. Did you skiers note the chairlifts? All SINGLES; there are none left in operation that I know of other than the one at Mad River Glen. The last time I rode a single chairlift was at Aspen in 1968; the single formerly serving Ruthie's Run. There are some detachable chairlifts now that can carry as many as six people. Sam, his childhood friend, is just beginning to fall in love with a new teacher at the high school. As they try to adjust to these conflicting emotions they find themselves having to evaluate their own relationship as well. John's Comments- A movie racking two couples' relationships. There is a scene of four guys, including two of the principals skating and racing around on a frozen lake. All were wearing hockey skates. One inevitably falls through thin ice into the lake, Johnson in this case. Johnson and Daniels appear to have done their own skating. A man's wife is to die in an accident and an angel sets him back three days in time in order to prove that he loves her. The skating is a scene at a local ice rink when they return to Boston. As she pursues her goal with relentless focus, she is forced to destroy anything and anyone that may stand in her way, regardless of the ultimate cost or means necessary. John's Comments- Olivia Olivares posted about this one. This one had several interviews at an ice rink; even saw someone in the background do what looked like a triple sow. There was a marginal skater, I believe an above interviewee, skating on the frozen river into which the Kidman character was disposed of. Trudi reports: Ileana Douglas, actually took lessons so she could do her own skating here, and reportedly enjoyed it so much that she continued lessons after the movie was in the can.
